RTE Smother star Conor Mullen very impressed by U2 drummer cousin Larry Mullen Jr's acting skills

Smother star Conor Mullen has said he is very impressed by his U2 drummer cousin’s acting skills.

The actor, who plays Frank in the hit RTE drama, thinks Larry Mullen Jr is great and loved seeing him star alongside Donald Sutherland in Man on the Train in 2011.

He can’t offer any advice to the musician ahead of his acting debut and said he is not sure if he has any other acting roles lined-up.

He said: “I didn’t give him any tips, I wouldn’t presume. I thought he did a great job.

“He’s doing a lot of things as you can imagine, he’s got a lot of different projects going on.

“I’m not sure what his next one is or might be but I think he did a great job.”

And he said he spent more time than ever before with Larry during lockdown.

He went on: “I do see Larry, we live quite close to each other. During lockdown when we were all in our 5km and 2km restrictions we would bump into each other.

“We nearly saw more of each other then than we did before.”

And Conor revealed how he got into acting instead of going into the family business.

He went on: “I had been working in the family business and I was miserable and didn’t know what I wanted to do.

“I had started going to the theatre and got interested in that. I decided I was going to leave Ireland and went to New York for a couple of years and studied there.

“By the time I got back I was too involved and realised it was what I did. One thing led to another and that was it. It just unfolded rather than it being a very clear decision.”

Meanwhile, fellow Smother co-star Hilary Rose who plays Frank’s love interest Alanna, revealed she worked as a DJ before going into acting.

She said: “I was a DJ for a very long time so that kind of filled that performance gap I was looking for but was never fully satisfied with.

“I went back and trained as an actor a lot later than most others. I think I was 25 or 26 where as most do it after they leave school.

“I didn’t really know what I was doing but just knew that I wanted to do it.”

The last episode of Smother hits our screens tonight at 9.30pm on RTE One.
