RTE remains tight-lipped over whether or not it would welcome Eoghan McDermott back to the station.
The former 2FM DJ addressed allegations on Wednesday that were made about him last year on social media after months of silence.
He tweeted a legal letter which stated the woman who made the allegations against the Limerick native acknowledges the falsity of her claim about their relationship and retracts it unequivocally and accepts that she also falsely claimed he had fled the country on account of her claims.
But RTE has yet to make any comment in relation to McDermott’s comments and the national broadcaster declined to comment about whether or not it would welcome McDermott back at the station.
A spokesman for RTE told us: “RTE has no comment”.
In a bombshell tweet, McDermott said on Wednesday: “A few months ago, false allegations were made about me. Despite not being investigated or verified, these allegations were spread widely, the effects of which I am still processing. I hope the below can close this chapter.”
He then tweeted out the legal letter to his followers.
McDermott has now launched legal action against Twitter.
His solicitors filed papers against Twitter International Unlimited Company in the High Court.
The 38-year-old has been absent from the spotlight since last February, when he suddenly disappeared from the 2FM Breakfast Show – which he hosted with Doireann Garrihy.
Two weeks later, RTE confirmed that he wouldn’t be returning to the show, saying they were “developing a new direction for the 2FM Breakfast Show”.
In a short statement last March, RTE confirmed that “Eoghan McDermott will not be returning to RTE 2FM. His contract is due to expire shortly.
“RTE is developing a new direction for the 2FM Breakfast Show which will be revealed in the coming weeks,” it said.
Doireann now presents the morning show with Carl Mullan and Donncha O’Callaghan.
