RTE's Doireann Garrihy believes her podcast brings out the more human side to politicians

RTE star Doireann Garrihy said she believes her podcast has helped show a more human side to politicians.

The breakfast presenter is the host of the hugely successful The Laughs of your Life podcast, which sees her chat to many famous faces over the years.

But the weekly series has also hosted several enthusiastic politicians, including Simon Harris, Michael Healy-Rae and even Taoiseach Michael Martin.

Doireann told us she believes her podcast shows a more human side to politicians, saying all her guests surprise her.

“I’ve had a surprise with every single guest… I think it really brings out a human side. Particularly with politicians. I’ve had Simon Harris as well. I would get a lot of DMs (direct messages) from people saying, ‘now I don’t like him but…’”

Doireann is giving her podcast a break this summer as she works on lining up another stellar season. She told us what guests she would love next – including her icon, Beyonce.

“I’d love Graham Norton. I’ve given up on Beyonce. I feel she is too high,” she said laughing. "I’d love Fearne Cotton, Dermot Kennedy, President Michael D Higgins. They’re all on the list.”

Doireann previously told us she would love to see her podcast on the small screen.

She said at the time: “I do think it could be a successful TV show without a doubt…I think it would massively lend itself to TV and it is very low budget. It’s just me, the guest and maybe a small audience.”

When quizzed on if she’d been approached to bring the podcast to the small screen, the broadcaster was careful not to reveal too much.

“I’m not pushing it yet, because I love having it as my own baby. I would love to do it live and I’ve been thinking about it recently and people have DM’d (direct messaged) me asking would it go live and they’d love to come, so, I definitely think there’s an appetite for it,” Doireann added.
