After Ryan Tubridy's surprise announcement yesterday that he was leaving RTE's Late Late Show, Miriam O’Callaghan was the initial fan-favourite but now bookies are placing Claire Byrne as the most likely successor.
Fresh off the back of Thursday’s shock news that Tubridy is to step down as host of the show after 14 years at the helm, support is now starting to arrive for heavyweight current affairs presenter Claire Byrne. The popular broadcaster has now overtaken the long-standing favourite Miriam O’Callaghan with her odds drifting all the way out to 11/4 from 4/6, with Byrne now top of the betting at 7/4 from 6/1.
A spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “This is a three-filly affair so far with three top female broadcasters heading the betting to replace Ryan Tubridy. Claire Byrne has the gravitas required to host a show of this magnitude and she’s now raced ahead of Miriam in the betting this morning.”

Support is also well-spread out amongst some of Ireland’s favourite presenters with Sarah McInerney, another female contender. She is amongst the list at 5/1 despite being relatively new to RTE, having only taken the reins on RTE radio and RTE Primetime in 2021. Comedian Tommy Tiernan, who has proved a huge hit with viewers, is next in line at 6/1. Comic duo The Two Johnnie’s are 66/1 outsiders in the betting.
Among those less likely to host but still on the list are Vogue Williams and Joanne McNally, Bertie Ahern, Liveline's Joe Duffy and former Late Late host Pat Kenny.
