RTE's Brendan O'Connor jokes 'it's back to self-catering' after queue at Dublin Airport 'derails' plans

Passengers flying from Dublin Airport have been reporting long queues once again in recent days as they wait to get through security.

Around 50,000 people were expected to fly from the airport on Saturday as Liverpool and Leinster fans travelled to France.

While some people have taken to social media to voice their frustration about the delays, there is good news on the way for Irish holidaymakers jetting abroad this summer.

Dublin Airport had pledged that passengers will get through security in 30 minutes or less from early June, meaning the busy scenes in both terminals would be drastically reduced.

The DAA’s head of communications Kevin Cullinane told the Irish Independent that airport bosses are days away from fixing some of the main problems causing delays.

Commenting on the news, Brendan O'Connor said on his RTE Radio 1 show that while the reduced times are welcome, there is one important issue that needs to be addressed.

"That's all very well but can they fix the queue at Burger King because recently I got through security no problem and then I had time to kill," he joked.

"The queue at Burger King derailed everything, it was crazy stuff.

"I would normally be one of those mean people who brings their own sandwiches on the plane but this time I decided I would go crazy, I'll go to Burger King.

"I'll tell you, it's back to self-catering for me on flights."

He added on Saturday morning: "Lots of people travelling today to the Champions League and the Heineken Cup and we just checked before we came on air, and according to the DAA, they're saying the queue times at security are 50 minutes in Terminal 1 and 40 minutes in Terminal 2."

The current advice from Dublin Airport for anyone heading away over the coming days is as follows:

  • allow up to 2.5 hours before a short-haul flight, and up to 3.5 hours before a long-haul flight
  • If your flight is at 08:30 or after, please do not enter the terminals any earlier than 06.00
  • Security in T1 is now open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Security in T2 opens at 04.00, so people flying from T2 should factor this in
  • Airline check-in desk and bag drop opening times vary, so please contact your airline to confirm and plan your journey accordingly
