The RTE Guide has confirmed it has pulled its recent Christmas competition due to a publication error.
Readers of the TV listings magazine were asked to correctly identify what day of the week Christmas Day falls on this year: Monday, Wednesday or Saturday as part of a festive competition. The prize on offer was a two night hotel stay in Carton House in Co Kildare, as well as perks including an all-inclusive dinner and a spa treatment.
However, hopes of winning were dashed after readers pointed out that Christmas Day falls on Sunday this year, which did not feature as an answer option. The realisation quickly dawned on people after the festive guide was released on Monday.

One Twitter user pointed out: “Major mistake on page 62 of this year’s Christmas RTE guide for the luxurious stay in Carton House. Looks like nobody will be winning that competition.”
The magazine was forced to pull its festive competition from new editions as a result of the mistake. The RTE Guide has addressed the issue on social media, while a spokesperson has confirmed that any entrants will receive a refund- readers were asked to submit their answers via phone call or text for a fee of €2.00.
RTE Guide acknowledged on Twitter: “We’re really disappointed that this got through our proofing. We’ve shut the lines now and are working on a solution.”
Online users pointed out the need for accurate proofreading ahead of publication. However, others saw the funny side of the saga and made light of the incident.
One Twitter user teased: “Maybe every entrant will win a prize!”
The RTE Guide is Ireland’s most popular lifestyle and entertainment weekly magazine. Its Christmas edition provides TV listings for the duration of the festive season, spanning Christmas Eve through to January 6.
