RTE Claire Byrne Live viewers horrified as mum says toddler was left with broken shoulder after being hit by scrambler in public park

RTE Claire Byrne Live viewers were left horrified after the mum of a toddler appeared on the show to call for a total ban of scramblers after her child was struck by one whilst out for a walk in a Dublin park.

Sarah Lewis told Claire that her three-year-old daughter Holly was "lucky to be alive" after the incident which took place in the Sean Walsh Memorial Park, Tallaght, on April 15.

The mum said she was out for a walk with her mother, two-month-old baby and daughter Holly when they noticed some young boys travelling up and down the park on the scrambler.

She said: "My Mam made a comment that they were going to hit somebody, and unfortunately, ten minutes later they came up beside us, and they went straight into Holly and sent her flying face-first into the ground.

"The bike went over her back, her shoulder and her head.

"She was lying there for a few moments. I just froze in complete shock. I couldn't move."

After colliding with Holly, one of the boys fell from the scrambler but quickly got back on, and the group sped away without looking back.

Sarah said: "It was a terrible shock.

Holly was rushed to Tallaght General Hospital, where she was treated for a broken shoulder and cuts and bruises.

The mum said: "I was very lucky that Holly survived. It could have been a lot worse," adding that scramblers should be completely banned from all public areas.

"They should be completely scrapped," she said.

Later, Fianna Fail TD John Lahart said legislation is currently progressing through the Dail and laws regarding scramblers are expected to come into force this summer.

After Sarah's story, people were left in shock and took to Twitter to express their horror.

One person said: "Those kids who ran over that poor child should be jailed."

Another commented: "How many more injuries or deaths do they want to happen? Or is it just because it's certain areas it affects?"

While a third said: "No political appetite to tackle illegal bikes or scramblers, just lip service until someone is really hurt or killed".
