RSPCA's plea to rehome 'bewildered' dogs after finding 20 living free in field

They were discovered living in a private field with 20 other dogs - and have now begun their search for their new home.

Joe and Zac, both about seven-years-old, have been put up for adoption with the RSPCA's Birmingham Animal Centre after being rescued from a "very unusual environment".

The animal rescue team came across 20 huskies and Alaskan malamutes eating, playing and sleeping outside in a field.

It is thought their owner stayed in a caravan on site.

An RSPCA statement reads: "Their coats were incredibly filthy and matted. It's likely they have never seen a bath or a brush.

"Their owner had a caravan on site but we can't be sure if the dogs had ever had much access to the interior."

When taking Joe and Zac into the animal shelter, it was evident they hadn't had much access to the indoors.

"On entry to the centre both Joe and Zac were understandably bewildered," the statement adds.

"They were so very shut down, we even had to carry them from the van to their kennel.

"This was because they had never seen a collar or lead and had no idea how to walk on one."

However, the team managed to get them walking on a lead thanks to "lots of tasty rewards for being brave".

The statement reads: "They finally figured out how great it was to be out walking in their harnesses. It gave them back the freedom they were used to.

"Once more settled they each had their coat shaved off while under anaesthetic and we discovered these handsome looking boys underneath the filth and matts.

"Now we feel it is time to start searching for that very special forever home for them together."

Joe and Zac, both Alaskan malamutes, need a patient owner who is prepared to introduce them to the inside and outside world.

They need an adult-only home with no other pets and a large, secure garden to explore at their own pace.

"They will definitely need space and time to readjust to another new environment," it adds. "A 'hands off', no pressure home will suit them down to the ground.

"An owner experienced in the breed would be desirable but experience with introducing dogs gently and positively to new experiences is a must

"Although they lived with multiple dogs previously, we are looking for a dog free home as they appear to only enjoy being nosey from afar and watching dogs from a distance, rather than interacting with them.

"Plus then they will benefit from having all of their owner's attention.

"If you have the space to let these boys do their favourite thing, which is to run free, chase each other and play together, we can promise you will never tire of watching them."
