RPGs reign supreme as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ties Baldur's Gate 3's record-breaking Golden Joystick Awards haul

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has tied the Golden Joystick Awards record set by Baldur's Gate 3 in 2023.

At today's awards ceremony, the game itself came away with the awards for Best Soundtrack, Best Storytelling, and Best Visual Design, as well as the night's biggest prize - Ultimate Game of the Year. That was in addition to a Studio of the Year win for developer Sandfall Interactive, and performance awards for Jennifer English (Lead) and Ben Starr (Supporting).

That seven-award haul ties the record that Baldur's Gate 3 set in 2023, when it overcame the six awards won by The Last of Us Part 2 in 2020. Larian also claimed the Studio of the Year title, in addition to five other awards and a Supporting Performer win for Astarion actor Neil Newbon.

The biggest-ever winner remains The Witcher 3, which took home five awards after its release in 2015, but also won three more prizes the following year for its Blood & Wine expansion. In total, two Most Wanted awards claimed before that release means CDPR's total ten-award haul seems unlikely to be beaten anytime soon.

Nevertheless, for Clair Obscur to match the enormous acclaim of Baldur's Gate 3 is an outstanding achievement, especially when you consider that this is Sandfall's debut project. If it's capable of a sweep like this with its first game, I'll be very excited to see what it can do with its follow-up.

The other notable winners were Ghost of Yotei, GTA 6, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and PEAK, which all won two awards each.
