Royal Mint releases new £2 coin to celebrate 150 years of the FA Cup - where to get one

A new £2 coin has been launched by the Royal Mint to mark 150 years of the FA Cup.

The new commemorative piece features the iconic FA Cup trophy on one side with the words: “Celebrating 150 years of the FA cup.”

The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be seen on the obverse of the coin.

On the edge of £2 is the inscription “football’s greatest cup competition” in a further nod to the long-running knockout competition.

The coin, designed by artists Matt Dent and Christian Davies, will be used for the coin toss at the 150th FA Cup Final at Wembley on May 14.

We've got a guide on some of the rarest £2 coins in circulation and a step-by-step piece on how to tell if you've got a rare coin in your collection.

How do I find the FA Cup £2 coin?

The new FA Cup £2 coin isn't being released into general circulation - instead, you need to buy it online.

The price of a standard Brilliant Uncirculated edition costs £10 from the Royal Mint website, complete with commemorative packaging. The Westminster Collection is also selling just the coin for £8.99.

A silver-proof version of the FA Cup £2 can be bought for £72.50 from the Royal Mint, or a silver-proof Piedfort coin will set you back £117.50.

The most expensive edition, a gold-proof coin, comes with a hefty £1,125 price tag.

As this coin has only just gone on sale, it is unlikely you'll spot one in your spare change just yet.

You would also be relying on people willingly spending it, as there aren't any plans for it to be released it into circulation as it is a commemorative coin.

It will be accepted as legal tender if it does find its way into your pocket.

It is also hard to predict how valuable it could end up being worth.

Coins are typically worth more if they have a low mintage, and The Royal Mint has said there is an "unlimited" amount that could be minted of the FA Cup £2 Brilliant Uncirculated version.

However, football coins have proven popular with collectors in the past.

Change checking website Coin Hunter says the "offside rule" football 50p sells for around £10.54 on average on eBay but some have gone for as high as £30.

The Royal Mint director of commemorative coins Clare Maclennan said: “In what is an extra special season for everyone involved in the game, we are thrilled to be working with The FA and celebrating the 150th anniversary of the much-loved competition with a commemorative £2 coin.

“Designed with the trophy at its heart, it is fitting that the coin will be used for the coin toss during Final at Wembley in May.”

FA head of player status and competitions, David Newton, said: “The parallels between The Royal Mint’s traditional craftsmanship and innovations, and the Emirates FA Cup’s rich history and evolution over the years mean that this special coin is an incredibly fitting celebration of the competition’s 150th anniversary season.

“We are delighted that it will be used for the Final’s coin toss and fans across the country now have the chance to take home their very own piece of silverware to savour for years to come.”
