Royal Mint launches new Snowman and Snowdog collectable 50p coin - how to get one

The Royal Mint has released a special 50p celebrating ten years since the release of The Snowman And The Snowdog film.

The film, released in 2012, is the sequel to the much-loved Raymond Briggs book and film The Snowman.

One side of the new 50p features the Snowman and the Snowdog, and the other side has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The coins start at £11, for a 50p made of cupronickel - the same metal alloy used for normal 50ps.

There is also a cupronickel coin with a colour image of the Snowman and Snowdog, which costs £20.

The Royal Mint has made a sterling silver version of the coin too, costing £69.50, and a gold coin which will set you back £1,195.

You can buy the coins from the Royal Mint website.

Rebecca Morgan, director of collector services at the Royal Mint, said: “The Royal Mint first celebrated the heart-warming tale of The Snowman on official UK coins in 2018.

“Today, we are delighted to introduce another collectable 50p coin to the series celebrating 10 years since the release of The Snowman And The Snowdog.

“This year’s design is just as charming as ever and features an exclusive design by award-winning illustrator Robin Shaw.”

Mr Shaw said: “It’s a joy to be revisiting The Snowdog after 10 years. I’ve always been rather pleased when he’s around and imagined him keeping The Snowman company when we’re not looking.”

The coins are for sale on the Royal Mint website.

The Royal Mint has made many other special 50p coins this year.

Last month it launched a collection of Harry Potter coins which will initially feature Queen Elizabeth II and later King Charles III.

The coins are being released to mark 25 years since JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - the first in the series - was published.

The first two coins will be released this year and feature the Queen, while the final two will launch next year and feature Charles.

The Royal Mint is expecting high demand for the coins and said its Harry Potter collection will be one of "a small number" that will see a change of portrait during the series.

It has also begun making coins bearing the likeness of King Charles III for the first time following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Work started last month to produce 9.6 million copies of a new commemorative 50p coin , which will mark the late monarch's death at the age of 96.

In a touching tribute, the coin will feature a design that had been originally imprinted on coins to mark the Queen's coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1953.

It shows four quarters of the Royal Arms represented within a shield, while emblems of the home nations - a rose, a thistle, a shamrock and a leek - feature on the outside.
