Royal Mail looking for a handful of workers across the North East - here's how you can apply

Royal Mail has a handful of new roles for job seekers across the North East.

The jobs are targeted at people of all ages and those with different ranges experience - with promising apprenticeships also included in their exciting vacancy list for those looking to continue to learn on the job.

And while the positions are certainly not always easy, with a lot of physical exercise involved, they are certainly rewarding, allowing people to play an essential part in their community.

Founded in 1516 in London, the Royal Mail has since grown into the hardworking task force that exists today - ensuring the delivery of precious parcels and letters to people across the United Kingdom, six days a week.

Currently, the post experts are looking for people living in Newcastle, Sunderland, Northumberland and Tyneside to join their renowned team - with multiple vacancies scattered across the region.

For those wanting to get involved with the service themselves, here's a complete list of vacancies currently available across the North East including pay rates, working hours, and general duties expected.

Royal Mail's current vacancies in the North East:

Newcastle upon Tyne -

Cleaning Operative - Newcastle Mail Centre (NE11 0YY)

Pay: £8.91 per hour rising to £9.35 per hour after 24 months of employment.

Contract type: Permanent

Working hours: Part time, 15 hours per week, Monday to Friday (Between 5pm to 8pm)

Previous cleaning experience is desired, but not essential.

Naturally friendly, with good written and verbal communication skills, you’ll be able to communicate with customers and managers whilst complying with Health & Safety regulations.

The ideal candidate will be reliable, self-motivated with a keen eye for detail. You’ll be able to work on your own initiative, organising your own time, as you’ll be managed remotely.

Postperson with Driving - Heaton Delivery Office (NE6 1AA)

Pay: £10.55 (aged 18+) £8.44 (aged 17).

An additional £5.83 per hour Sunday premium, a weekly supplement of £26.61 (pro rata) and in some locations an area allowance is also payable.

Contract type: Permanent

Working hours: Part time, 26 hours per week , 5 days, Monday to Saturday (Between 9am and 3pm)

From scorching summer days to the depths of winter, the Royal Mail's postal workers play a vital role delivering the mail.

It’s a physically demanding job – but it’s one the nation relies on.

Successful applicants will:

  • Cover periods of leave for a fixed number of routes (so they will need to be a bit flexible)
  • Sort the mail for their route
  • Check their vehicle and join a colleague for their round
  • Spend between four and six hours delivering mail outdoors

A full driving license is also required for this vacancy.

Tyneside -

Royal Mail Fleet Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Technician - Tyneside (HGV)

Pay: Starting salary of £13,129 to £20,063 per year, dependent on age and location - rises each year until the completion of the programme.

Salary on completion is a minimum of £27,801 per year

Contract type: Three year apprenticeship programme beginning September 2022

Working hours: Revealed upon application

Training will be undertaken throughout the programme with an industry leading apprentice training provider at their designated technical training academy.

Three GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths, English and Science, at grade C or higher are required as a standard to enter this course.

Royal Mail promise to 'take individuals with a flair for mechanics and engineering, and turn them into automotive experts' throughout the duration of the programme itself.

Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship - Tyneside

Pay: Starting salary of £13,028 to £20,728 per year dependent on age, plus a minimum of £3,351 per year for inner London and minimum of £2,178 per year for outer London.

Annual pay increases are also awarded plus benefits.

Salary upon completion is guaranteed at a minimum of £31,024 per year.

Contract type: Three year apprenticeship programme with part of first year spent away in Blackburn

Working hours: Revealed upon application

On the advanced engineering apprenticeship, successful applicants get to grips with the cutting-edge technology needed to deliver a first-class service – covering everything from robotics to intelligent sorting machines.

On top of an unique foundation for understanding all of the technology involved in delivery, you'll learn how a FTSE-100 organisation uses it to improve its business.

You’ll spend part of your first year in Blackburn, working and learning alongside other engineering apprentices and getting under the skin of how things work in an engineering environment.

As part of this, you'll then learn how to fix, maintain and review our technology.

All whilst being guided by senior colleagues who will provide you with the support required to become a first class engineer. On top of your on-the-job experience you'll also work towards an Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship Mechatronics Technician Standard, that is recognised across the industry and will help you build your career here.

Further opportunities to continue onto higher level apprenticeships are available e.g. HNC, Degree and MSc programmes.

Northumberland -

Postperson with Driving - Prudhoe Delivery Office (NE42 6QG)

Pay: £10.55 (aged 18+) £8.44 (aged 17).

An additional £5.83 per hour Sunday premium, a weekly supplement of £26.61 (pro rata) and in some locations an area allowance is also payable.

Contract type: Fixed term

Working hours: Part time, 27.5 hours per week , 5 days, Monday to Sunday (Between 8am and 2pm, as well as 3pm and 8pm)

It’s a physically demanding job – but it’s one the nation relies on.

Successful applicants will:

  • Cover periods of leave for a fixed number of routes (so they will need to be a bit flexible)

  • Spend between four and six hours delivering mail outdoors
