Royal fans banned from taking selfies with King Charles on Bolton visit

Royal fans have been banned from taking selfies with King Charles during his visit to Bolton.

Crowds have started to gather outside the borough's town hall to catch a glimpse of King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, ahead of their visit at around lunchtime today (Friday). The King's visit marks the first time a reigning monarch has visited Bolton since 1988.

But while the excited fans have their cameras and phones ready to take snaps of the Royals, they have been told by security staff not to request a selfie with the King. Manchester Evening News reporter Tom Molloy overheard a member of security staff speaking to the crowds this morning.

They said that photos were fine - but that selfies were not allowed. The royal couple are visiting Bolton to celebrate 150 years of the borough's town hall. Their Majesties will be greeted at the town hall by a civic line up including Mayor Coun Akhtar Zaman, leading councillors and local MPs.

During their visit to the town, the King and Queen Consort will be treated to a performance from the Polonez folk dance group. The pair will then enter the town hall via the Hall of Memories, pausing to look at LS Lowry’s famous painting Going to the Match, which was inspired by Bolton Wanderers’ old Burnden Park ground.

Afterwards, they will join a reception in the main hall to meet representatives from several community groups including Bolton Asian Elders, Bolton Holiday Activities and Food Programme and Fortalice. This is Charles' first visit to the region as King, but he held several notable engagements in Greater Manchester while he was still the Prince of Wales.

On one occasion in 1997 he met up with the Spice Girls, while in December 2000 he attended the legendary set of Coronation Street.
