A former Friary has gone up for sale in Newark and its history is amazing.
Now converted into a four-bedroom home, the property makes a comfortable and unique house but take a look into the history books and you may be surprised by the royalty that is said to be connected with its creation.
The building is within walking distance of Newark town centre - a location just oozing with history - so you'd be right in thinking that there's plenty of background and history to be found attached to this property too.
According to the current owner, the first part of the building was funded by Henry VII and built and occupied by Friars around 1500, hence the name the Friary.
They said it was known as a stopping point for King Charles the 1st in the 1600s.
Today it certainly stands out as a building of note but in its day it was said to be one of the most prominent and substantial dwellings in Newark.
The owner says that there were even rumours that a tunnel existed between the Friary, Newark Castle and the Church.
However, I'm afraid there is no 'secret tunnel' to be found today.
What is evident though is how the building has been adapted to create some lovely living accommodation.
Now divided into four large dwellings with a large ornamental garden, the selling agent for a property currently up for sale in The Friary, says that it is a great example of how historic architecture can be tastefully retained and incorporated into modern day living.
In it's current arrangement, the section of the Grade II listed building that is for sale provides a home of around 2,480 sq ft.
Accommodation includes two reception rooms, a breakfast kitchen, entrance hall, four bedrooms, an en suite, a family bathroom and a cloakroom WC. Bedroom two has a dressing room and a study area.
There are two garages and parking plus private gardens as well as managed communal gardens.
Up for sale with Purple Bricks, the property is priced at £550,000.
The owner of the property for sale expands on the history of the building.
They said that in 1867 it was bought by a wealthy family and with its location so central to town it was seen as one of the great houses of the area with a wing built for cooks, servants and gardeners who maintained its ornamental gardens.
For those looking to make it their home, the house is for sale with Purplebricks. Arrange viewing or obtain further details through the agent.
