Royal Caribbean ship springs a leak during Bahamas cruise

Royal Caribbean passengers have experienced some alarming incidents on multiple ships in recent weeks and the flood of accidents keeps on gushing.

On Halloween night on Symphony of the Seas, passengers got drenched during a Halloween party when fog from dry ice set off the ship’s sprinkler system in the promenade. Harmony of the Seas experienced a similar situation in November when smoke alarms were triggered on a Western Caribbean cruise returning to Galveston, Texas.

Unexpected weather incidents also panicked passengers and caused damage on two Royal Caribbean ships sailing transatlantic cruises in November. Explorer of the Seas severely tilted on Nov. 7 due to a wild wind gust and Odyssey of the Seas was rocked by rough seas a few days later.

Now, Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas has become the next ship to be hit with a soaking wet mishap. During a Bahamas weekend getaway cruise from Miami, the ship sprung a leak on one of its stateroom decks.

Allure of the Seas’ hallway floods after pipe bursts

Allure of the Seas departed Miami on Dec. 6 for a Bahamas cruise visiting Nassau and Royal Caribbean’s private destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay. On the second night of the cruise, passengers in one part of the ship were abruptly woken when a pipe burst, sending water raining down from the ceiling onto the deck below.

A TikTok video posted by Allure of the Seas passenger Joshua Esquenazi, @joshuaofrichardson on TikTok, shows the hallway of Forward Deck 10 flooded with water pouring from the ceiling and soaking the carpet.

A popular comment on the video quoted a line from the classic holiday film "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" to make light of the situation with a fitting joke for the holiday season:

“Why is the carpet all wet Todd? I don’t know Margo! IYKYK”

The passenger who posted the video added a comment later to praise Royal Caribbean for the crew’s quick attention to the issue:

“Update pipe stopped and leak being fixed and people moved right away to other rooms. RC does things right when nature rumbles.”

In a follow-up video he posted the next day, Esquenazi reiterated his comments saying the water was cleaned up that night and the passengers whose rooms were impacted were moved. He also reported that none of the affected passengers experienced loss or damage from the water leak.

According to Esquenazi, that’s one of the great things about Royal Caribbean, “They do take care of you right away whenever things happen.”

Allure of the Seas will undergo major refurbishment soon

Royal Caribbean’s second Oasis-class ship, which entered service in 2010, Allure of the Seas is scheduled for dry dock in early 2025 to complete major upgrades. The modernization project was postponed during the pandemic and now it seems the renovations can’t come soon enough.

Royal Caribbean is investing more than $100 million into the ship to prepare it for an “Allure Amplified” summer season in Europe. When it debuts its transformation in April 2025, Allure of the Seas will offer passengers more than 35 ways to dine and drink including Royal Caribbean’s popular Pesky Parrot tiki bar.

Highlights of the refreshed ship will include resort-style pools on a reimagined Caribbean pool deck and new thrills like the 10-story dry slide, the Ultimate Abyss. The ship will also feature the latest of the Royal Escape Room lineup, Apollo 18: Lunar Landing, and a glow-in-the-dark laser tag arena.

New Ultimate Panoramic Suites above the ship’s bridge will offer 200-degree ocean views as Allure of Seas sails a variety of western Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona, Spain in summer 2025. Following its summer season, Allure of the Seas will head to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in November 2025 to sail a season of six- to eight-night cruises to the eastern Caribbean and The Bahamas.
