Roy Keane issues trophy warning to Newcastle United after latest Wembley heartache

Roy Keane has warned Newcastle United that winning their first major trophy will be the 'hardest' step after losing 2-0 against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final.

Casemiro opened the scoring for the Red Devils just after the hour-mark, before Marcus Rashford's low shot was diverted over the gloves of Loris Karius off Sven Botman.

Newcastle dominated large periods of the second half but were ultimately unable to find a route back into the game. Although former Man United captain Keane acknowledged the significance of Newcastle reaching the final, he believes the next step is to end their trophy drought.

"The next step for Newcastle is the hardest one. There is now expectation at the club. It’s okay getting to a final, but we said all along it’s about getting your hands on that trophy," Keane told Sky Sports.

The Magpies have undergone a remarkable transformation under Eddie Howe, and reached their first domestic cup final since 1999, and their first League Cup final in 47 years.

Focus will now switch to the Premier League, as they aim to propel themselves back into the top four in the coming weeks.
