Roy Keane and the pundits who swapped the couch for the dugout as Hibs talk ramps up

It's one thing sitting in a warm TV studio during a post-match debrief, but it's a whole other challenge sitting on the sidelines.

Roy Keane could be about to find that all over again as talk builds over a potential move to Hibs.

It's an appointment that wouldn't be dull as the Manchester United legend looks for his first managerial post since leaving Ipswich in 2011.

But it's a well trodden path from the studio to the dugout - and not always the easiest transition.

Keane will have plenty of warning signs to look out for and fellow Sky Sports pundits to ask about the transition.

Record Sport takes a look at how some of Keane's colleagues have faired when after their TV appearances.

Gary Neville

The Manchester United legend was a surprise choice to take over a Valencia as he traded the Monday Night Football studio for the Mestalla.

The former England coach took on his first top job in La Liga, and having wowed viewers on Sky Sports many were expected big things from Neville.

But his Valencia side failed to win in his first 12 league games at the helm, but the worst moment of his tenure came at the Camp Nou, when they were hammered 7-0 by Barcelona.

He was axed by the La Liga giants after less than four months in charge.

Thierry Henry

The Arsenal legend was another big name who had caught the eye in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

However, his hot takes didn't translate results during a tumultuous time in the Monaco dugout.

He walked into a Ligue 1 relegation scrap and was suspended by the club having only two league games during his three month spell at the club.

Henry left the club in 19th and they would eventually be relegated from the French top flight. He's back coaching with Belgium.

Neil McCann

Former Rangers hero Neil McCann has faced a mixed time when he left the studio for a shot at management.

He traded the surroundings at the BBC for Dens Park back in 2017, initially on an interim basis. Having helped Dundee secure their spot in the Scottish Premiership, he was handed the top job permanently before being axed just eight games into the new season with a tally of just three points.

Having settled back into the Sportsound studio for a couple of years, McCann would step out of his comfort zone and into Inverness' promotion push on a caretaker basis last season. He would help the Highland outfit secure a promotion playoff spot before bowing out at the end of the Championship campaign.

Alan Shearer

It seemed like a match made in heaven as Newcastle legend Alan Shearer left his BBC duties to take on the top job at his former club. Surely the iconic Geordie hero could save his side from the drop?

Well, it didn't quite work out that way. Shearer's eight games in 2009 yielded only five points out of a possible twenty-four and ended in relegation.

The England cap hasn't tried his hand at coaching since as he focusses on his regular spot on Match of the Day.

Paul Scholes

The Manchester United hero walked away from his role as a BT pundit to become manager at his local side Oldham in 2019.

That spell in League Two ended after just 31 days.

Scholes could only muster one win in his seven games at the helm but the off-field struggles with owner Abdallah Lemsagam had been the real issue for the club.

The Latics dropped out of the English football league for the first time in 115 year this season.

Mark Wilson

The former Celtic defender has become a regular on Clyde 1's Superscoreboard programme, but has also dabbled in management.

He first took on the gig at League One side Airdrie during the 2016-17 campaign under the watchful eye of fellow pundit and director of football Gordon Dalziel.

Wilson would steer the Diamonds to the playoff spots, before they were defeated by Alloa in the semi-final.

He would leave the Lanarkshire side at the end of the campaign before trying his hand at Brechin in 2019.

They would finish rock bottom of League Two in his debut campaign, but would avoid the relegation playoff after the campaign was curtailed.

A five game losing streak while conceding 26 goals would see WIlson axed shortly into the new season.
