Roy Hodgson has just proven Liverpool's major problem

Liverpool's defeat to Leeds United has ended several long-standing records - but it is a record matched that may upset fans the most.

The Reds lost 2-1 at Anfield thanks to Rodrigo's opening goal and Crysencio Summerville's 89th-minute winner. Mohamed Salah had equalised just minutes after Rodrigo put Leeds ahead, but Jurgen Klopp's side missed a litany of chances as they found Whites goalkeeper Illan Meslier in outstanding form.

Defeat for Liverpool was their first at Anfield since March 2021, and their first in front of a full home stadium since 2017. It was also Virgil van Dijk's first home defeat while playing since he arrived in 2018.

It leaves them ninth in the Premier League with an equal share of four wins, four draws and four defeats from 12 games - a record Opta stat-man Duncan Alexander pointed out to be exactly the same as Roy Hodgson's Liverpool, who began the 2010/2011 campaign with exactly the same record.

Hodgson's much-derided tenure in charge from 2010-2011 remains one of the worst moments in Liverpool's Premier League history, so to match that 12-game record is undoubtedly cause for concern on Merseyside.

It is Liverpool's worst start to a season since Klopp arrived and their third-worst start in Premier League history. The Reds have Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the league to try and right those wrongs before the league breaks for the World Cup.
