Ross Redman heading back to Shamrock Park as Portadown announce defender's signing

Portadown have announced the return of defender Ross Redman.

The experienced full-back has joined the Ports following the expiration of his contract with Ballymena United.

It sees the 33-year-old come back for a second spell with Portadown, the club where he started his Irish League career.

He spent 12 years at Shamrock Park before going on to have spells with Glentoran (twice), Dungannon Swifts and the Sky Blues.

Portadown - who also announced the signing of Caolin Coyle from Dungannon Swifts - said on social media: "Portadown Football Club is delighted this evening to announce the signing of Ross Redman on expiration of his contract with Ballymena United."

Meanwhile, Ballymena confirmed Redman's departure by tweeting: "We’d like to thank @R_Redman1 for his contribution to Ballymena United during his time here and wish him all the best for the future."

Redman's arrival is a welcome shot of experience for Ports boss Niall Currie who has started his preparations for life in the Championship next season.

Portadown finished bottom of the Premiership, their relegation confirmed on the penultimate day of the season with a 3-2 defeat to Dungannon Swifts.

Redman could be the first of several departures from Ballymena United this summer, with the Showgrounds club having to rebuild following a disappointing season where they finished ninth in the Premiership and lost 4-0 in the Irish Cup final.

Another player being linked with a potential move to Shamrock Park is Sky Blues defender Douglas Wilson.

Ballymena are currently without a manager following the departure of David Jeffrey last week. Former captain Jim Ervin is believed to be the frontrunner for the Warden Street post.
