Rory McIlroy to miss cut after disastrous second round as play temporarily suspended at Masters

It was a disastrous second day for Rory McIlroy as he will miss the cut as his race for the career Grand Slam goes on.

McIlroy looked a frustrated figure after his opening round 72 and hit his worst round at Augusta since 2016 and will not be around for the weekend.

The four-time major winner started off with bogeys on the second and third holes and it set the tone for the day and McIlroy backed that up with bogeys on holes six and seven.

Another bogey on 11 saw McIlroy sit at five over par but did give himself a glimmer of hope of making the cut with birdies on 13 and 15 but two bogeys in the final three was all she wrote for the former world number one.

Play was temporarily suspended due to fear of lighting with Irish amateur Matt McClean also set to miss the cut.

Shane Lowry sits in a tie for ninth place at four under par while Seamus Power is in a tie for 38th and level par.
