Rory McIlroy says players have no reason to object to Trump’s Irish Open visit

  • Rory McIlroy has acknowledged the logistical challenges of Donald Trump attending this week's Amgen Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg, but said that players will simply “keep our heads down and play”.
  • The United States president is undertaking an official two-day visit to Ireland this week, with expectations that he will attend the DP World Tour event where extra security measures and crowd restrictions will be implemented.
  • Speaking to BBC Northern Ireland, world number two McIlroy stated that although the president's presence presents obstacles, the players have no reason to object to his attendance, as he asked: “Who are we to say no?”
  • Donald Trump and McIlroy have a history of playing golf together, with the US president previously praising the golfer on Truth Social following his Masters victory in April.
  • McIlroy previously opted to skip the Cadillac Championship at Trump Doral after accepting an invitation from Donald Trump to attend a White House state dinner alongside King Charles.
