Rory McIlroy's dad's explicit reaction to sliced tee shot hilariously picked up by TV mics at Dunhill Links

We've all been there.

While every golfer can relate to Gerry McIlroy's frustration here, that the TV microphones picked up his two-word response made for comedy gold during the third round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The moment was enhanced by it being prefaced by the soothing tones of veteran commentator Ewen Murray saying: “Another chance to have a look at the swing of McIlroy Senior..."

Gerry's audible 'Ah s**t' seconds later then summed up the cruel nature of golf as succintcly as possible.

Sky veteran Murray then added: "Maybe I should apologise for that but I think we all knew exactly what he was thinking."

However, while that moment on the 14th tee at St. Andrews tripped him up, overall dad and son put together another fine round in the team tournament to finish up their Saturday on 22 under - leaving them in top spot by eight strokes.

Rory is also going fairly well in the serious business of the pro singles.

He sits eight shots off leader Richard Mansell, but just four off Daniel Gavins, Ryan Fox and Alex Norén, who are all tied for second.

The four-time major winner's playing partner for Sunday will actually be Padraig Harrington, who is one shot further back.

But funnily enough, Rory joked that playing with his dad at the pro-am tournament was the aspect of this week that he was most looking forward to.

At a media briefing on Wednesday, he told Sky Sports: "It's a lot of fun. When we get to play it certainly is one of the weeks that I look forward to the most.

"Like even just strolling around the course this morning with him, with Danny Willett and with Jimmy Dunne who's a good friend of ours as well.

"You just don't get to do this too often so yeah it's really, really nice.

"As you say we've come close to winning a couple of times before. We were beaten on a count-back the last time we were here.

"I said in the press conference there that I'm probably more focused on the team event than I am on the individual one!"
