Rory McIlroy forced his way back into contention at the BMW PGA Championship, signing for a five-under-par second round to lie four shots off the pace set by American Ryan Gerard at Wentworth.
Having dropped three shots over his final six holes on Thursday, the Northern Irishman made a swift recovery on Friday afternoon with three birdies across his opening five holes.
McIlroy, who is attempting to catch Patrick Reed in pursuit of a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title, bogeyed the par-four eighth to reach the turn in 33 before holing a 16-foot birdie putt on the 11th.
Another birdie at the par-three 14th was followed by a bogey on 16 after his second shot found the heavy rough.
An eagle attempt on the 17th rolled just wide, leaving him a tap-in birdie, before he signed off with another birdie on the 18th to complete a 67.
Reed’s hopes of becoming only the second American after Collin Morikawa to win the Race to Dubai suffered a setback as he retired with an injury at nine over, opening a path for McIlroy over the weekend.
"Unfortunately he’s pulled out this week, which gives me an opportunity to try to claw back some ground that I lost last week in Ireland," the world number two said.
"This weekend is a big weekend for me to pick up a few points and make the race even tighter going into these last few weeks."
Gerard, who started Friday on five under, converted a 20-foot eagle putt on the 17th before closing with a birdie to cap a flawless 65 and take the outright lead.
Adam Scott finished at 10 under after a 67 that featured three bogeys.
"I have had a couple of easy weeks," the Australian said. "I felt a little under done, probably, golf-wise coming in here, but at least fresh mentally. I think that has been good for me the last couple days."
Italy’s Filippo Celli, making his debut at Wentworth after regaining his tour card this season, recorded seven birdies and a single bogey in a round of 66.
US PGA champion Aaron Rai, playing alongside Masters winner McIlroy and Open champion Ryan Fox in the feature group, finished birdie-birdie for a 69 to join Spain’s Manuel Elvira at nine under.
JJ Spaun, starting on the 10th tee, holed an eagle on the 18th en route to a 66, leaving him tied at eight under with McIlroy and Fox.
Former US Open champion Spaun plans to add more DP World Tour fixtures to his calendar in light of upcoming changes to the PGA Tour.
"This was kind of like a stepping stone, just to see how it was and if I like it," he said.
"I definitely feel like I am going to plan a little bit more of a global schedule or a European schedule moving forward in the fall time."
Matt Wallace sits at seven under, while fellow Englishman Jordan Smith posted two eagles in a 67 to join the group at six under.
Tommy Fleetwood missed the cut at three over, while two-time major winner Jon Rahm finished dead last on 11 over after a 77 gave him his worst 36-hole total.
