After an errant strike, the Holywood man found himself stuck in the trees just off the cart path.
Making matters worse, was the small the small matter of a steel fence to his right which could have been no more than a metre away.
Off an extremely bare lie, McIlroy let rip and hit a low, slinging hook through the trees.
Remarkably, despite being so out of position, the Northern Irishman managed to stitch the green, much to the delight of the fans in attendance.
As you can see from the video above, the commentators couldn't quite believe what they had just seen.
With 14 holes played, McIlroy is in a tie for 25th place on one-over par.
