Rory McIlroy hailed for 'showing his class' after 'missed opportunity' at US Open

Rory McIlroy has been praised for 'showing his class' following the conclusion of the US Open on Sunday.

McIlroy warmly embraced Matt Fitzpatrick and congratulated him after the Englishman won his first major at Brookline.

Speaking to the 27-year-old, McIlroy said: “All that work pays off. So happy for you, I’m so happy for you.”

Viewers took to social media to praise the world number two for staying on the course to congratulate Fitzpatrick.

One said: "Rory McIlroy sticking around to congratulate Fitzpatrick. All class--as usual."

Another tweeted: "what a gentleman @McIlroyRory congratulating @MattFitz94 after his incredible but thoroughly deserved win last night at the US Open!!

Someone else added: "Real touch of class there by Rory McIlroy on the 18th green. Not the best week for him but still right there to congratulate Fitzpatrick!"

One other person commented: "@McIlroyRory You waiting to congratulate Fitzpatrick just shows was a classy awesome guy you are!!!!"

McIlroy there were positives to take from his US Open performance despite describing it as "another missed opportunity".

Speaking after his round, he told Sky Sports: "I'll look back at this as another missed opportunity just as Southern Hills was, but missed opportunities are better than not contending at all. So that is a positive.

"I have to stay patient at this point because if I just keep putting myself in position, sooner or later it's going to be my day and I'm going to get one.

"It's not win or bust. It's not as if where I finished today is the same as not playing on the weekend. I guess when I look back, will I remember the fifth place I had at Brookline? Probably not.

"Yeah, there's positives to take from it. I played well enough to give myself a chance to win. I didn't get the job done, but I'm closer than I have been in a while, which is good."
