Rory McIlroy has commented on criticism he’s received from golf media outlets, as the Northern Irishman looks ahead to the 2025 campaign.

Rory McIlroy Comments On Golf Media Criticism Ahead Of 2025

The golf veteran gave fans a deep dive into his thoughts, feelings and everything in-between on a documentary that was recently released on Sky Sports.

In this piece of content, McIlroy revealed all on the trials and tribulations he faced during the 2024 campaign – which included some highs and lows.

The 35-year-old won the Dubai Desert Classic, Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Wells Fargo Championship and the DP World Tour Championship during the year.

However, McIlroy also suffered some crushing mistakes, failing to perform in the final three holes at the US Open which would have ended a decade-long wait for a major title.

In this documentary, the Northern Irish golf star highlighted how the layout of the course was suited for the eventual winner, Bryson DeChambeau and how he knew what result was coming.

McIlroy said: “You’re very aware of what is happening behind you. It’s hard enough just having to concentrate on yourself and just focus on what you’re doing but whenever your attention is taken away by focusing and looking at what your competitor does it makes it even more difficult.

“I think it was a combination of everything that went into me playing those last four holes in three-over par.”

Following this slip up that allowed DeChambeau to clinch the title, McIlroy decided to walk off and not wait to give his congratulations to the winner – whilst also saying very little in any interviews.

This is where the 35-year-old highlighted the issues he has faced with criticism from golf media outlets and social media in general.

When asked if he is his biggest critic or if it’s the media, McIlroy said: “Probably the media and the social media aspect.

“I’m hard on myself but at the same time, again, as I said I try to focus very hard on the positives and move forward and learn from my mistakes but then move on because that’s all you can do in any walk of life.”

McIlroy will be looking ahead to a big year in 2025, with the Norther Irishman being one of the favourites to win a host of titles including the Masters and US Open on UK betting sites.
