Rory McIlroy breaks silence after USPGA frustration in blow for Irish golf fans

Rory McIlroy has confirmed that he will not play at this year's Irish Open at Mount Juliet.

But the Hollywood native will take part in JP McManus' Pro-Am before heading to St Andrews for The Open later this summer.

McIlroy will play in the Memorial, the RBC Canadian Open, the Travelers and the US Open before skipping the Irish Open, which takes place from 30 June to 3 July.

Speaking to media for the first time since his US PGA Championship disappointment last weekend, the world number eight said: "I'll play these next four weeks and then it's two weeks out from competitive golf I guess.

"I'll go to Adare Manor and play JP's Pro-Am and then just probably be around the area that week, play some links golf and then head to St Andrews maybe the weekend before to get some prep done."

McIlroy left Southern Hills without speaking to the media following his final round on Sunday, something he has come in for criticism for.

The 33-year-old finished eighth at the second major of the season after a final round 68, which left him on two under par for the tournament.

Following his round, McIlroy quickly collected his belongings from the locker room and headed to his car without doing any interviews with waiting reporters.

He told the Irish Independent: "I definitely feel like it was one that got away. But, again, I have to take the positives - and the fact that eighth place in a Major is absolutely the worst I feel I could've finished last week."
