Ron Gordon's Hibs go big or go home strategy as Ben Kensell admits 'we made mistakes' after boss changes

Ben Kensell insists Hibs owner Ron Gordon is willing to take the neccessary risks that can make them stand out from the rest of Scotland.

Last season brought turbulence to Easter Road and the American businessman was put under pressure when the club sacked two managers in one season. New boss Lee Johnson has brought a sense of calm after Jack Ross ' reign ended and was followed by a calamitous Shaun Maloney tenure, with the club now fighting for the Premiership's third spot.

Chief executive Kensell, speaking to FC Business is not shying away from the errors that saw Hibs finish in the bottom six last season and there's been some hierarchy reflection done at the Hibees. He said: "On the footballing side it didn't help having a few managerial changes last year and ultimately we had a disappointing season in the league because of that instability.

"But in the cup competitions we reached a Cup semi-final and the League Cup final where we were narrowly beaten by Celtic. We want stability, we made mistakes and held our hands up to it but It doesn't change the overall plan and how we achieve the vision.

"It hurts when things don't work as you want them to but we showed great resilience during a tough period to stay together and I know we will benefit from that."

That vision is something Gordon is willing to get to by taking some bold steps as Hibs custodian. It might not always works out, but Kensell says it's better to aim for the moon and fall amongst the stars.

He added: "We want to be the club that does things differently in Scotland and that is something that comes from the very top - the owner.

"Ron's someone who doesn't mind taking risks and is very clear that something might not work but it's much better to fail trying than not doing anything at all.

"He's a great owner and we have a similar mindset, but we need to be clear on what we are going after and communicate to staff, players, stakeholders and fans so everyone understands the direction we want to head in."
