Romantic Valentine's Day breaks in Scotland to take in 10 cosy towns and villages

With Valentine's Day just about here, most couples will have already planned how to spend the big day.

Whether it's an intimate dinner at a nice restaurant, or a relaxing spa day, there are countless ways to celebrate. Even if you have left it to the very last minute, do not fear.

Instead of rushing to the supermarket to buy the first bouquet of roses or stuffed bear you come across, why not head to one of Scotland's countless breathtaking villages and towns this weekend for a romantic getaway?

We've pulled together some of the most perfect Scottish destinations that will offer the ideal place to stay for a Valentine's Day break.

Portree, Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is one of the most striking locations in Scotland, if not the world. From the iconic fairy pools to the historic Dunvegan Castle, there is plenty to see and do.

The best spot to stay on the island is its largest town, Portree, which has easy access to the island's many sights and also has plenty to offer itself. The harbour is the perfect spot for a romantic photo, while there are numerous cosy pubs and restaurants serving up delicious local cuisine.

Melrose, Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders is home to some of the most picturesque spots in all of Scotland, including the small town and civil parish of Melrose. If you're looking for things to do while in the town, head to Melrose Abbey — which is not only stunning but is also the resting place of Robert the Bruce's heart.

After you've done that, there are numerous family butchers, bakers and chocolate makers on Melrose's historic High Street that will make you feel like you've journeyed back in time. Before heading to one of the town's Michelin-recommended restaurants, make sure you try a Melrose tart — a pastry that includes honey, brown sugar, and ginger.

Fort William, Highlands

Known as the outdoor capital of the UK, Fort William is the perfect destination for couples who love to be out in nature. That doesn't mean the town doesn't have plenty to offer those who would rather not hike up a mountain, though.

From the Ben Nevis Distillery, where you can head on a tour and sample some world-class whisky, to a selection of charming restaurants, pubs, and hotels to relax in and enjoy the company of your other half, Fort William is among the best spots in Scotland to head this Valentine's Day.

Killin, Stirling

Located at the western head of Loch Tay, the small village of Killin is the perfect spot for couples who want some peace and quiet this Valentine's Day. While there are plenty of walks in the nearby mountains of Breadalbane, the village itself is a great place to relax in.

If it's a romantic dinner you're after, you can't go wrong with The Courie Inn or the Falls of Dochart Inn. The former serves up Highland-inspired dishes in an intimate setting, while the latter overlooks the magnificent Falls of Dochart and even has a fireplace.

Islay, Argyll and Bute

The southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, Islay is known for its many distilleries that produce the island's uniquely peaty single malt. It's therefore a great Valentine's destination for those who love their whisky.

Even if you and your partner aren't whisky lovers, Islay is undoubtedly still worth a visit. After spending a day out soaking in its magnificent landscapes and wildlife, you can chow down on some spectacular seafood at one of its numerous cosy restaurants — with the Port Charlotte Hotel Restaurant being a particular highlight.

Culross, Fife

This village and former royal burgh in Fife has a population of around just 400, and is regarded as the most complete example of a burgh of the 17th and 18th centuries. Featuring cobbled causeways and white-walled buildings, you couldn't ask for much more in terms of views.

Beyond that, Culross is a must-see for Outlander fans, with the town and its historical buildings featuring in many of the television series' episodes. It is best known for being used as the fictional village of Cranesmuir in season one.

St Andrews, Fife

There is nothing more romantic than being beside the sea, and the pretty town of St Andrews is one of the best spots in Scotland to breathe in the fresh coastal air. While most know it for its university and golf heritage, the town is also great for a Valentine's getaway.

From its one-of-a-kind beaches to its lush landscapes, you and your partner are unlikely to forget your time spent in the town. You can even get a boat ride down the Firth of Forth before heading back to enjoy a romantic dinner at one of St Andrew's Michelin-starred restaurants.

Pitlochry, Perth and Kinross

Largely a Victorian town, Pitlochry is popular among tourists for its historic main street and Scottish Baronial architecture. Its beautiful surroundings and incomparable walking and hiking trails also make it the perfect spot for couples looking to get out into nature.

Whisky lovers, meanwhile, should be sure to head to the Blair Athol Distillery, which is one of the oldest working distilleries in the country. Its guided tour is highly recommended, where you can enjoy a yummy dram of Blair Athol Single Malt Whisky.

Glencoe, Highland

Found between the banks of Loch Leven and the towering mountains of Glen Coe, Glencoe village is as scenic as its location suggests. Visitors will no doubt enjoy learning about the history and clans of the area at the Glencoe and North Lorn Museum, while there is a great selection of bars and restaurants to relax in.

There are also unsurprisingly plenty of walking trails to head out on, where film fans will recognise shooting locations from iconic movies such as Skyfall and Harry Potter.

Crieff, Perth and Kinross

Crieff is a Scottish market town that is particularly popular among food lovers and nature enthusiasts. Among its finest eateries are Craobh, The Tea Garden at Comrie Croft, and Delivino.

Heading out into the stunning Perthshire countryside, popular walks include The Hosh Circuit, Ben Chonzie, and Lady Mary's Walk.
