Roman Kemp praised for raising awareness of 'serious' sleep disorder with oxygen mask pic

Roman Kemp has been flooded with support after posting a picture of himself in an oxygen mask before he hit the hay.

The Capital FM breakfast show DJ gave fans a glimpse into his life with sleep apnoea as he prepared to go to bed with his Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine on.

The 29-year-old uses the device to help ease his symptoms which include “interruptions or pauses in breathing, often because the throat or airways briefly collapse or something temporarily blocks them,” according to the NHS.

The Celebrity Gogglebox star was diagnosed with the sleep disorder earlier this year after visiting a doctor with suspected narcolepsy, which is a condition that causes someone to suddenly fall asleep.

Roman's CPAP machine helps him breathe normally by sending a steady flow of pressurised air into the nose and mouth as he sleeps.

"The best thing is, it’s not that noticeable on your face…" Roman joked in the caption, as he shared a selfie from bed with the less-than-subtle contraption on his face.

His fans and followers rushed to the comments section of the post to shower him with praise for raising awareness of the 'serious' health condition.

Former Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw joked: "I can hardly see it," to which Roman replied: "Too small if anything."

"Raising awareness tho @romankemp sleep apnoea is a serious thing,” one fan wrote, while another applauded him and said: "Good to see a young man normalising sleep apnea.”

Someone else added: "Raising awareness tho @romankemp sleep apnoea is a serious thing (sic)."

Speaking to the Daily Mail at the time he was diagnosed, The One Show host Roman said: "I recently got diagnosed with sleep apnoea, which has been rubbish. My tiredness levels were debilitating, and they said to me it was because of my job and I said: 'this is different'.

"I was talking with people where I thought I was verging on narcolepsy because I was mid conversation and would be snoring and not realising, it was very strange. The doctors told me I must wear an oxygen mask.

"There is absolutely nothing sexy about going back to Roman Kemp's house. They are expecting candles and mood lighting but they're getting a Darth Vader impression into an oxygen tank. My love life will look like a niche Channel 5 documentary!" he added.
