Rolls Royce factory demolition plans move forward

Plans to knock down the former Rolls Royce factory off Dunnings Bridge Road in Netherton have moved forward.

The demolition is expected to pave the way for the redevelopment of the site to create a "modern, sustainable and fit-for-purpose" employment scheme.

The buildings at Atlantic Park include the former factory, known as Big Foot, and its lab testing facility, along with Caspian House and Atlantic House.

A prior notification application was filed with Sefton Council last month and has now been approved.

A document prepared by Turley - on behalf of the Royal London Property Pension Fund - said permission for demolition is sought independently from any redevelopment applications. It added that the dismantling of Big Foot should take place at the "earliest possible opportunity" as the structure "detracts from the attractiveness of Atlantic Park" and "physically hinders new development".

There will be two phases of demolition, the first of which will include the removal of asbestos. The overall project is expected to take between eight and ten months.

Atlantic Park benefits from outline planning permission for new trade and employment space.

Rolls Royce closed its Merseyside plant in 2007 with the loss of hundreds of jobs. It produced gas turbines for use in industry.
