Rohan Smith sets Leeds Rhinos Boxing Day goal as season preparations ramp up

Rohan Smith wants his Leeds Rhinos stars to being reaping the benefits of their off-season graft when they take on Wakefield Trinity on Boxing Day. The Rhinos have been in pre-season for over a month and return to the field for the first time since their defeat to New Zealand when they host their local rivals in the annual festive fixture at Headingley.

Smith, who has already named his side for the contest, has spent the past weeks implementing his beliefs on the squad as well as trying players in different positions. The likes of Ash Handley and Morgan Gannon will be put to the test when they play at fullback and back-row respectively.

The game will also provide several academy products with their first taste of top-flight action, and Smith is hoping everyone gains from the experience both individually and collectively.

"I want to get a lot out of it," he said. "I want to see how players can transfer what we've been working on from a rugby league point of view as well as a physical point of view. I want to see that in action, people playing together and getting the season started, essentially.

"I'm excited by it, from what I understand fans look forward to it, people are off work and with their family, what a way to enjoy some time off work and with family than watching players rip in and entertain us. I'm looking forward to reacquainting with the fans and introducing a few new players from our Academy. Building a squad for years ahead and the season ahead, this is about giving people exposure to a level they haven't before."

Two players who won't feature are Rhyse Martin and Zane Tetevano, who both played in the World Cup. Smith confirmed both will report back to the club after the new year.
