Mewgenics co-creator Edmund McMillen has commented on the roguelike's potential console ports, saying Nintendo Switch 2 will probably be first to the plate.
While Mewgenics is tearing it up over on Steam as one of the most popular roguelikes to ever hit the PC storefront, console players are naturally feeling a bit left out from what seems like the first game of the year frontrunner of 2026 (before everyone inevitably gives it to GTA 6). And while its creator already confirmed the roguelike is heading for consoles and has DLC plans in the works, it looks like Nintendo fans may be in with a chance of getting first dibs when it comes to the console versions.
In an AMA on the Steam Deck subreddit (via Nintendo Life), McMillen is asked if the game will be coming to PS4 and PS5, to which he responds: "We are deciding on a publisher now and defer to them when it comes to what they feel is worth developing for." He adds: "I have no idea what is viable anymore." But even with that caveat, McMillen says, "I know switch 2 seems like the front runner right now."
Having already poured over 110 hours into Mewgenics over the past month or so, I'd still be down to start it all over again on the Switch 2. Or at the very least, hope that a console release makes the game get a better layout for controller users, as the short amount of time I did play on the Steam Deck felt a far bit clunkier than I'd have liked compared to other tactical RPGs like Into The Breach and Final Fantasy Tactics.
