Tennis fans hoping to see Roger Federer in action for one final time face having to spend their life savings after resale prices for Laver Cup tickets rocketed.
Last week, the Swiss maestro released an emotional statement confirming he would be retiring at the conclusion of the team event, which sees Team Europe take on Team World at The O2 Arena. Federer is retiring following fitness issues which have plagued him over the past year, and it has since been confirmed that he will only play in the doubles on Friday night.
But that hasn't stopped fans clamouring for tickets anyway, with the official event website crashing just minutes after the all-time great made his announcement last Thursday. According to aceodds.com , demands for seats have escalated more than 4000%.
And those already in possession of tickets aren't missing the opportunity either. Renowned tennis reporter Jon Wertheim has released staggering figures of resale prices, with a ticket in Row D going for a mere £45,090.
Row K was hardly much cheaper, priced at £33,360, while a Row L seat could be considered a snip at just £26,000. He shared a screenshot of the prices sent to him by a friend.
Those trying their luck on Viagogo will come across cheaper options, albeit still at prices that represent a good chunk of a standard person's annual income. The top ticket there is currently on sale for just over £46,000, with the less adequate views available for just over £1,700.
Fans were left unimpressed by the post, with @FritzyMcFritz saying: "Probably the only person interested in tennis who could afford that is Roger himself!" while @micheleblument1 added: "This can’t be real." @ToddScoullar wryly observed: "A little pricey…"
If the 20-time Grand Slam champion is to take to the court, then Friday appears the best bet. Andy Murray has already expressed his desire to play doubles with his long-term rival, admitting: "That would be really special."
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will also represent Team Europe, along with US Open finalist Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Italian star Matteo Berrettini will take over from Federer following the conclusion of Friday's doubles.
