Rodrigo Blankenship wins Colts’ kicker job

Rodrigo Blankenship has won the starting kicker job for the Indianapolis Colts for the third year in a row.

Following the news that punter Rigoberto Sanchez suffered a torn Achilles, the Colts signed Matt Haack from free agency. In a corresponding move, the Colts waived Blankenship’s competition, Jake Verity, from the roster on Thursday.

Blankenship was already leading the battle over Verity for the majority of training camp and the preseason. Verity proved to have more range in his leg, but his consistency didn’t match Blankenship’s.

The third-year kicker has had competition in every season since joining the roster in 2020. In his rookie campaign, he battled with Chase McLaughlin. In 2021, he battled with Eddy Pineiro. Both times ended with Blankenship starting the season as the kicker.

Throughout his career, Blankenship has converted 43 of 51 field-goal attempts (84.3%) and 50 of 53 extra-point attempts (94.3%).
