Rod Stewart has opened up on his relationship with wife Penny Lancaster as they celebrate their 16th anniversary.
The pair, who started dating in 1999 and tied the knot in 2017, have two sons together - Alastair, 18, and Aiden, 13 - and are one of the most loved up couples in showbiz. “I’m definitely more romantic than she is,” he told The Mirror.
“I dress up every night for a formal dinner together. I absolutely love it. I love lighting all the candles.”
Both Rod and Penny have incredibly busy schedules as the Maggie May singer jets across the world on tour as well as his philanthropy. The 78-year-old funded his own mission to Ukraine where he rescued refugees at the border before housing and giving a family jobs in the UK.
Then he vowed to cut NHS waiting lists by paying for private MRI scans, while simultaneously performing his Global Hits tour around the world. Penny, who frequently appears on Loose Women, has also been busy working as a Special Constable for the London Metropolitan Police and campaigning for the menopause.
Due to their schedules, Rod admitted it can be hard to spend time together. “We often joke about the fact that we can both be in this large house in Essex and not see each other," he told the publication.
“We stay within the perimeters of the house but we don’t see each other until the evening. We wake up, have a cup of tea in bed together, and then she goes her way and I go mine. It’s lovely, we are not on top of each other all the time. We’re very fortunate in that position.”
This comes after reports surfaced that Rod and Penny renewed their vows for the second time at an intimate ceremony in Australia. The pair, who started dating in 1999, renewed their vows for the first time in 2017 to mark their ten year anniversary.
The couple renewed their vows during Rod's Australian tour as the singer reportedly "spaced out his tour" so his children could attend the ceremony, according to Woman's Day magazine. "There's a very good reason why Rod's insisted he space out his tour dates – it's the perfect place and the perfect time to renew their wedding vows," a close pal told the publication.
"They wanted to do this years ago but, just like his Aussie tour, that's been another thing on hold. Now they can't wait and are using this chance to do something special while here."
The insider added: "Penny and Rod love being in love, they think there's something fun about celebrating their vows in different locations around the world, so why not do it all again in Sydney!"
Recently Rod became a grandfather all over again as two of his children welcomed grandchildren within a few days of each other. On May 9, daughter Ruby had son Otis and then four days later, his son Liam welcomed son Louie.
Rod shares daughter Ruby with ex-girlfriend Kelly Emberg and Liam with ex-wife Rachel Hunter. Die-hard Celtic fan Rod revealed that the two tots are already sporting his beloved clubs kits.
He told the Mirror: "It was very fulfilling. There was supposed to be six weeks apart, but one was late and one was early and we got done in four days.
“They are both boys and they have already got their Celtic tops. There’s no other way they can go right? My other boys are Celtic too, they had no option either when they were born.”
