Australian cricket legend Rod Marsh is in a serious condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack.

The 74-year-old was taken ill after a charity event in Queensland, where he has been fulfilling engagements on a Bull Masters tour.

Marsh was rushed to Bundaberg Hospital, where he was joined by former team-mates.

"The thoughts of everyone within cricket are with the family and many friends of Rod Marsh, who is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack this morning," read a statement from the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA).

"Rod is an influential figure in Australian cricket and has been so for more than 50 years.

"He was in Bundaberg as part of the Queensland Bulls Masters event and is currently surrounded by some of his former team-mates. He will soon be joined by his family, who are making their way to Bundaberg."

Marsh is a huge figure in Australian cricket, having taken a then world-record 355 dismissals in 96 Test appearances as a mainstay with the gloves between 1970-84.

He was particularly known for his effective partnership with legendary fast bowler Dennis Lillee.

Marsh is a former England selector and also served as director of the ECB's national academy from 2001-05.

He also previously worked as director of the Australian Cricket Academy and stood down as Australia's chairman of selectors in the wake of the series loss to South Africa in November 2016.

Marsh also had stints as a cricket commentator in Australia with Channel Nine.
