Philadelphia tourism officials are leaning into one of the city's strangest sports superstitions after Ecuador became the latest team linked to the infamous "Rocky Statue Curse," during the team's first match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a tongue-in-cheek Instagram post published by Pennsylvania tourism authorities, World Cup delegations from Brazil, Haiti, France, Iraq, Curaçao, Croatia, and Ghana were welcomed to Philadelphia with one important piece of advice: don't dress Rocky Balboa in your team's colors. The post specifically referenced Ecuador's experience last weekend and warned visiting nations about what locals call the "Rocky Statue Curse."
The warning came just days after thousands of Ecuadorian fans turned Philadelphia's iconic Rocky Steps into a sea of yellow before Ecuador's World Cup opener against Ivory Coast.
Among those celebrating was Colombian social media star Beta Mejía, the boyfriend of Ecuadorian television personality Alejandra Jaramillo. Videos that quickly went viral showed Mejía helping place an Ecuadorian flag on the Rocky statue despite warnings from fans familiar with the superstition. After Ecuador's heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast on June 14, Mejía jokingly apologized online.
"Parce, I think I messed up," Mejía said in Spanish in a video posted before the match after learning about the curse. According to reporting from The Philadelphia Inquirer, fans repeatedly shouted "No, no, no!" as the influencer attempted to place the flag on Rocky's shoulders.
What Is the Rocky Statue Curse?
The superstition dates back decades and centers on the famous Rocky Balboa statue outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Philadelphia sports fans believe visiting teams are doomed whenever supporters decorate the statue with their colors before a major game.
The legend gained national attention in January 2018 when Minnesota Vikings fans dressed Rocky in purple before the NFC Championship Game. Philadelphia then crushed Minnesota 38-7. Similar stories followed involving fans of the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders before major losses against Philadelphia teams.
Local media and fans were quick to connect Ecuador's fate to the same phenomenon after Ivory Coast stunned La Tri with a 90th-minute winner. Ecuador hit the post three times during the match and became only the fourth team in World Cup history to strike the woodwork three times and still lose.
Even CBS Sports Golazo joked on social media that "the moment Ecuador fans put their shirt on Rocky, the outcome was inevitable."
Philadelphia's Upcoming World Cup Visitors
The warning from Pennsylvania tourism officials wasn't random. Several nations still have matches scheduled in Philadelphia over the coming weeks.
According to the city's World Cup schedule, Philadelphia will host:
- Brazil vs. Haiti — June 19
- France vs. Iraq — June 22
- Curaçao vs. Ivory Coast — June 25
- A Round of 16 knockout match on July 4
Those are the countries specifically mentioned in the tourism campaign's warning graphic, alongside Croatia and Ghana, whose supporters are also expected to visit the city during the tournament.
