Rockstar developers to formally unionize ahead of legal battle with the company

After Rockstar fired 31 developers last year, it has been involved in a legal case over alleged union busting, led by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB). Now, Rockstar’s developers announced their own union, the Rockstar Games Workers Union (RGWU), which will participate in the lawsuit.

That is according to Rockstar Intel, which writes that the union’s formal announcement came today via a video published by IWGB. This new union will be a part of the IWGB and apparently be the one to face Rockstar in court over alleged union-busting in relation to Rockstar’s firing of 31 developers last year.

In the video shared by IWGB, it is stated that Rockstar’s move last year was “one of the most blatant and ruthless acts of union busting the games industry has ever seen.” The union started small in Rockstar North but has now expanded across the country, as stated in the video. Developers from multiple “Rockstar sites” in Leeds, Edinburgh, and London, among others, have since joined the union.

The union is also “preparing to take Rockstar to court over the firings,” but the date hasn’t been revealed yet, although it has been set.

The union aims to “change the landscape of the UK gaming industry” and has also asked any developers to contribute to its efforts, or to join the union if they work at Rockstar.
