The Rockies claimed their first road series at the Giants in almost three years.
Colorado’s 4-2 win at San Francisco on Thursday afternoon featured a quality start from Austin Gomber and timely hitting combined with mistakes by the Giants. The Rockies won Tuesday’s matchup to take two of three from their division rivals, which is something they hadn’t done since late June 2019.
Colorado, on a six-day, seven-game road trip, now heads down to San Diego for four games this weekend. The Rockies (25-32) have not won consecutive games dating back to early May.
Gomber spearheaded their victory Thursday by recovering from a shaky second inning — two earned runs on two hits, one walk and a hit-by-pitch — to retire 12 of the next 14 Giants he faced. He didn’t allow another run while totaling five strikeouts and walking just one.
Meanwhile, outfielder Charlie Blackmon continued his hot streak going 3 of 5 with a pair of doubles. He played a key role in the fourth inning when Colorado grabbed the momentum.
Blackmon reached base on an error by San Francisco infielder Thairo Estrada. It was the first of three Giants errors — Estrada (twice) and Austin Slater — during the inning. The Rockies took advantage when a Brendan Rodgers single scored Blackmon. Then Colorado took its first lead, 3-2, when a Yonathan Daza single brought home C.J. Cron.
Tyler Rogers, a Chatfield High School graduate, replaced Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb in the seventh. He walked Connor Joe and gave up a Blackmon double. A Ryan McMahon single put the Rockies ahead 4-2.
Colorado relievers Robert Stephenson, Carlos Estevez and Alex Colome pitched the final three innings.
