Rockets decline to extend qualifying offer to Trevelin Queen

Reigning NBA G League MVP Trevelin Queen is now an unrestricted free agent after the Houston Rockets declined to issue a qualifying offer (QO) on him for next season, per Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports.

While that decision does not preclude the 25-year-old guard from returning to the Rockets, it would appear to make it less likely, since he would have been a restricted free agent had Houston issued the QO.

The Rockets added three rookies in the 2022 draft class, including another backcourt prospect in Kentucky’s TyTy Washington. Between that and the four-for-one trade involving Christian Wood, roster spots are suddenly at a premium, and that could potentially squeeze Queen out.

Queen played only sparingly with the Rockets last season on a two-way contract, but he excelled with Houston’s G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Vipers — where Queen averaged 25.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. That performance should result in Queen having at least some NBA interest, according to Haynes.
