Rochelle Humes opened up about her childhood as she hosted Thursday's This Morning alongside Vernon Kay.
Rochelle and Vernon invited guests into the ITV studio to discuss some of the latest headlines when Rochelle decided to talk about growing up with a single parent.
The mother-of-three began the conversation by announcing that nearly half of British children now grow up outside the traditional two-parent household, according to a report on the make-up of the modern family.
A review being published by Dame Rachel de Souza, the children’s commissioner for England, has found that almost a quarter of families are headed by a lone parent, compared with the EU average of one eighth.
Commenting on the statistics, Rochelle said: "I remember, so I grew up raised by my mum and my mum only, and when I was younger it was kind of the thing that I was almost a little embarrassed about it.
"So they'd be like, 'oh who's your dad?' and I'd be like, 'oh he's never here, I don't really know him that much', and it was always something that I felt sort of deep shame about as a child which is an odd thing," she continued.
"But now, I'm surprised its only one in four is what they're saying, one in four families, I'm actually surprised at that because I feel it's almost rare to say, 'oh my mum and dad have been married for 30 odd years', that's quite rare now."
Earlier this year, Rochelle confirmed that she doesn't hold any ill feelings towards her dad Mark Piper.
Speaking on a podcast, Rochelle said: “It was just me and Mum. She and Dad split when I was tiny, just short of one.
“And then that was sort of it, really. I had contact with my dad for little bursts of time but it was never anything solid. And then the contact stopped altogether.”
Rochelle, who found fame with girl band The Saturdays, has huge respect for her mother and the way she handled the fact Mark wasn’t in their life.
To ease the pain, Roz told her: “Some daddies aren’t very good at looking after little girls because it is easier for them to look after little boys.”
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
