Robson Green celebrates the most 'classic North East dish' in BBC series

Robson Green's BBC series Weekend Escapes is continuing to treat North East viewers by showing off the beauty of the region - and a recent episode saw the actor celebrate a favourite local delicacy.

The tenth episode of the series, which is available in its entirety on BBC iPlayer, saw Robson head to Hexham and explore the idyllic Northumberland countryside with his uncle Matheson. And it was definitely one for the Geordies as the pair set about making one of the North East's most classic dishes: the stottie.

Like many of us born and bred in the region, Robson had fond childhood memories of tucking into stotties. He told his uncle: "I remember going into your house and the smell - Nana Sarah just kneading the bread. It tasted amazing."

Robson and Matheson then visited a cookery class in Linnels Farm, Hexham, where they had a go at making their own stotties - and Robson explained where the word itself comes from. "The word stot means to throw against a wall," he said as they got stuck into the dough.

When they later got to tuck into their finished stotties, Robson and Matheson both opted for the classic 'native' filling. "You're just meant to have ham and pease pudding on stotties," Matheson declared as he piled it on.

"It's interesting, isn't it - like the stottie, pease pudding outside the North East is very difficult to find," Robson mused. "You talk to anybody South of Gateshead about pease pudding and they've never heard of it."

"It's a classic North-Eastern dish," Robson praised while he polished off his own stottie. The pair then hit the road once again to head to their digs for the night - a "youth hostel with a difference".

"I've stayed in hotels that weren't this nice," Matheson remarked as they turned up at YHA The Sill in Bardon Mill. After spending the night in the swish hostel, they embarked on a picturesque wall along Hadrian's Wall to the iconic Sycamore Gap where they tucked into some sandwiches - made, of course, with leftover stottie.

Meanwhile, viewers are continuing to love the BBC series. "Robson Green's Weekend Escapes is a wonderful advert for North East tourism," one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another viewer added: "I've reached an age where I not only enjoy, but look forward to Robson Green's Weekend Escapes."
