The Jets will not have quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the rest of the 2023 season and now there are thoughts that the four-time MVP and one-time Super Bowl champion will hang up his cleats for good following his Achilles tear Monday night against the Buffalo Bills.
Head coach Robert Saleh isn’t buying any of that. He would be shocked if this would be the way Rodgers decided to end his career.
Buy Jets Tickets“I haven’t gone down that road with him,” Saleh said when asked if he and Rodgers talked about the future. “I’d be shocked if this is the way he’s going to go out, but at the same time for him, he’s working through a whole lot of head space, and things that he needs to deal with and that will be the last thing I talk to him about.”
Rodgers will be 40 years old when he returns to the football field. The earliest might be in June during OTAs and minicamp. He just restructured his contract that would pay him $75 million guaranteed between this season and next season, so if he were to retire, he would leave about $38 million in guaranteed total compensation on the table for 2024.
Rodgers had also made comments a few times during the offseason sounding like this was not a one-year fling with the Jets. He also just made an Instagram post thanking fans for their support and saying “I shall rise yet again.” Right now, it’s fair to believe Rodgers will be back as the Jets quarterback in 2024.
