Robert Pattinson launches his collaboration with Sotheby’s

Robert Pattinson to curate Sotheby’s contemporary art auction in New York (Sotheby’s/PA)

ACTOR Robert Pattinson has teamed up with Sotheby’s auction house in New York to work as a curator. The Batman star, from Barnes, helped select six paintings for a sale in New York next week.

The six contemporary works include pieces by Willem de Kooning, Richard Serra and Lynette Yadom-Boakye. Some were not impressed. “What would he know about art?” wondered an online sceptic. Another said: “Replace all Art curators with teen idol Hollywood celebrities”.

However, another said: “we need more ‘visible’ people (aka celebs)... to advocate for the arts and drive an intrigue and interest in young people to look at art.”

In a promotional video, Pattinson says: “When you first start acting, you think you're supposed to be doing a psychological breakdown of the character and it's quite dry.”

He said he was inspired by director Claire Denis, who he worked with on film High Life, to look at art in a different way. “I remember seeing a sculpture in the museum and I suddenly realising 'Oh this sculpture is what I'm trying to do as the performance”.

“I realised after that you don't have to explain something in a literal way, the only thing that matters is the inspiration, and I get that from alot of different paintings now.”
