Robert Lewandowski insists Bayern Munich story ‘is over’ but Bundesliga champions hit back at striker

Robert Lewandowski has declared his time as a Bayern Munich player as he called on the club to let him leave this summer.

The 33-year-old still has a year remaining on his contract with the Bundesliga champions, but he has made it increasingly clear in recent weeks that he is seeking a move away amid links with Barcelona.

Speaking ahead of Poland’s Nations League clash with Wales, Lewandowski made it very clear that he believes he has played his final match for Bayern after spending eight years at the club.

“One thing is certain today – my story with Bayern is over,” Lewandowski said.

“After everything that has happened in recent months, I cannot imagine further good co-operation.

“Bayern is a serious club and I hope they will not keep me just because they can. A transfer is the best solution for all parties. I hope they don’t stop me.”

However, the Bayern hierarchy have insisted they do not plan on selling the striker this summer and are willing to let him leave for free in a year’s time instead.

Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn criticised Lewandowski for his comments and issued a warning to the player that they would not help his cause.

“I can’t tell you why Robert chose this way to communicate his situation,” Kahn told Sport1. “Public statements like that don’t get you anywhere.

“Robert should know what he has at Bayern. Appreciation is not a one-way street.”
