Robert Jenrick latest: New Reform MP burns bridges with Tories after sacking prompts defection to Farage’s party

Former shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has launched a deeply scathing attack on the Conservatives as Nigel Farage revealed him as Reform UK’s new recruit.

The party that he claimed had "failed so badly" were not sorry about mistakes made in government, Mr Jenrick insisted.

Conservative leader Mrs Badenoch sacked him earlier on Thursday, citing "irrefutable evidence that he was plotting" to jump ship in a "damaging" way.

At a Westminster press conference alongside Mr Farage, Mr Jenrick said: "I can't kid myself any more. The party hasn't changed and it won't.”

Mr Farage thanked Ms Badenoch, saying she had “handed him on a plate” the man who had “done more than anything in history” to realign centre-right politics, as he unveiled Mr Jenrick as a new member.

Tory chairman Kevin Hollinrake said there was no going back into the Conservatives for Mr Jenrick.

Mr Farage said a well known Labour figure would be announced as another defector to Reform on Tuesday.

Last month, the then shadow justice secretary insisted he “wasn’t going anywhere” when asked about a possible defection.

Shadow secretary affirms Tories are 'united' despite defection

18:57 , Bryony Gooch

Tory MP Andrew Griffiths, shadow secretary for business and trade, has affirmed that the Conservatives remain united despite Robert Jenrick’s defection.

“I came into politics from business. I know there’s no ‘I’ in team.

“In the face of the epic damage the socialists in Downing Street are doing, we are not short of reasons for @Conservatives to be united.

“Leadership involves laying down the line.”

Jenrick barred from disagreeing with me in public, says Farage

17:43 , Jane Dalton

Nigel Farage says Robert Jenrick will not be allowed to disagree with him in public.

Answering a question from The Independent’s Kate Devlin, he said: “The only rule I have as leader is that we have our disagreements, we have our arguments, we have our rows behind closed doors.

“People in politics who have disputes in public with me generally don't tend to do terribly well.”

Farage says he did not offer Jenrick a title

17:28 , Jane Dalton

Nigel Farage insisted he had not offered Mr Jenrick a rank, title, position or money.

Mr Jenrick said: “Nobody leaves a party which they're the bookies’ favourite to be leader out of ambition.

“You do this out of conviction. I've done this today because I'm convinced it's the right thing to do for my constituents, and to the country.”

Defecting was hard but the right thing, Jenrick insists

17:24 , Jane Dalton

Robert Jenrick has said defecting to Reform UK was a difficult decision, and not one that he took lightly, but he was convinced it was the right thing to do for the country.

Denying he had ambitions to take Mr Farage’s job as party leader, he said: “Whatever the bookies say about being leader of the Tory party, I've done it because I think Nigel is the man to lead this country.”

Jenrick says he won’t call a by-election

17:17 , Kate Devlin

Robert Jenrick says he will not call a by-election and stand as a Reform candidate.

Under the Westminster system, MPs are allowed the change party without asking voters a say.

“I don’t intend to call a by-election,” Mr Jenrick said.

He said he won last time around because his voters knew he was independent-minded and stood up for them.

Tories hit back at Jenrick 'disloyalty'

After he criticised Priti Patel, the Tories have pointed out a tweet he posted in 2024.

In it he said: “My friend Priti Patel is a relentless champion for Conservatism whose experience will be invaluable as we rebuild.”

Jenrick hails 'incredible movement'

17:04 , Jane Dalton

Mr Jenrick has praised Reform UK as an “incredible movement”.

“People will come from outside of politics, people who've done great things in business, in our schools, in our hospitals, our prisons, our armed forces, people the two political parties have locked out and ignored for far too long.

“For all those reasons today, I'm proud to join the more than 270,000 people who are members of Reform UK to back Nigel, to join this incredible movement, a national movement that will pull Britain's talents, experience and expertise, put previous differences to one side and deliver the real change we need turn our country around.”

Jenrick was in talks with Reform for months

17:01 , Jane Dalton

Mr Jenrick has revealed he has been in talks with Reform UK for months, having contacted the party in September.

“I just knew the responsible thing to do, the honest thing to do, for me, was to explore all options,” he said.

Divisions and delusions remain in Tories

16:59 , Jane Dalton

Mr Jenrick has laid into his former party, claiming the “cracks, the divisions, the delusions” are still in the Tories.

He said he respected Kemi Badenoch, but “the party hasn't changed, and it won't. The bulk of the party don't get it”.

“They don't have the stomach for the radical change that Britain needs. In opposition, it's easy to paper over these cracks, but the divisions, the delusions, are still there,” he said.

“And if we don't get the next government right, Britain will likely slip beyond the point of repair.”

Tories won't and can't change, Jenrick claims

16:55 , Jane Dalton

Mr Jenrick has claimed the Conservatives won’t and can’t change, and said he did not trust the party on immigration.

“At a recent shadow cabinet debate, a conversation broke out. The question was put to the group, is Britain broken? I said, instinctively, it's broken. Almost everyone said it's not broken,” he said.

“And we were told that is the party line. A few, a few had a third position. It is broken, but we can't say so, because the Conservative Party broke it.

“If they won't admit publicly to you the British people, what they broke? What possible faith can you have in them to fix it?

“The Conservative Party in Westminster isn't sorry. It doesn't get it. It hasn't changed. It won't change. It can't change.”

Tories knew migrants plan would not work, says Jenrick

16:51 , Jane Dalton

Mr Jenrick claimed the shadow cabinet knew its plan to stop the boats crossing the Channel would not work.

“I’ll never forget attending a Cabinet meeting in Downing Street where a plan to stop the votes was signed off, but everyone, to a man and a woman around that table knew in their hearts it was not going to work. Some even joked about it,” he said.

“I left Downing Street. That night, resolved to resign from the cabinet and I've never forgotten that.”

Tories nearly broke Britain, says Jenrick in swipe at old party

16:49 , Jane Dalton

Mr Jenrick, after being announced as Reform UK’s latest recruit, listed what he said were the key problems facing the UK that needed fixing.

The country was in a dangerous, precarious position, he said, and both Labour and the Conservatives had broken Britain, he said.

In a swipe at his old party, he said the Tories nearly broke Britain.

“93% of crime goes unresolved. The courts are backlogged. The prisons are overflowing. Our army is a small it's been since Napoleonic times.

“193,000 people have come here on small boats since 2018 last year. One illegal migrant raped a 12 year old girl.

“Terrorists have broken into Britain on small boats, and we're living through the most profound change to our population in our nation's history, net migration is 100 times higher in the 25 years after 1997 than in the 25 years before it. One in five in Britain weren't born here.”

She told Sky News: “The worst thing was that the way he was planning to do it was not just about leaving but hurting the other people in the party.

“I think that's quite wrong, and I think reform needs to be looking at what kind of person it is they're taking in, someone who's very happy to hurt his some different people to see the truth.”

Lords given more time to discuss assisted dying bill

16:03 , Jane Dalton

Sittings in the House of Lords on the proposed assisted-dying law are to be extended to provide around an extra 25 hours for peers to complete their scrutiny.

Longer sessions will be held on the Fridays allocated for debate of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

The Bill will become law only if the Commons and Lords agree on its final drafting, with approval needed before spring when the session of Parliament ends.

With the clock ticking, supporters of the law change have accused some opponents in the Lords of filibustering and trying to "talk out" the legislation, having tabled more than 1,000 amendments - a record number for a private member's Bill.

Row could harm Badenoch if she can't prove claims, says expert

15:26 , Millie Cooke

If Kemi Badenoch is unable to prove that Robert Jenrick was going to defect, today’s saga could do damage to her authority, polling guru Sir John Curtice has warned.

He told The Independent that there were two possible scenarios that could play out in the coming days.

“On the one hand, does this cement Badenoch’s authority over her party, and in a sense, perhaps help to discourage other MPs from making the leap?

“Or does it end up being a mess where perhaps she isn't able to prove… that Jenrick was about to defect? But then Jenrick wanders off anyway and says, ‘I was pushed out, I wanted to stay, it's not my fault’. And that, as a result, does the damage.”

No way back into Tories for Jenrick, says party chief

15:10 , Jane Dalton

There is no way back for Robert Jenrick into the Conservative Party, the Tory chairman has signalled.

When Kevin Hollinrake was asked whether he thought there was now “no way back” for the ex-shadow justice secretary into the Tories, he replied: “That’s right. We’re very clear on that.”

Mr Hollinrake also suggested that discussions over sacking Mr Jenrick began on Wednesday.

Asked by Sky News when the party leadership became aware of documents alleged to detail Mr Jenrick’s intention to defect, the Tory chairman said he had been “discussing this last night” with party leader Mrs Badenoch, before adding he did not want to “be too specific in terms of these things”.

Jenrick branded 'treacherous' by party chief

14:49 , Jane Dalton

Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake branded Mr Jenrick's move "treacherous" as he suggested the ex-shadow minister had reacted poorly to his defeat in the Tory leadership contest.

Mr Hollinrake told the BBC: "It's fair to say Rob didn't take losing the leadership contest very well, so I think it's been difficult at times with Rob trying to get him on side.

"We didn't expect this. We didn't want this. But having seen what we've seen, there was no other course of action Kemi could take."

Badenoch urged to show evidence

14:08 , Jane Dalton

Former Conservative MP Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg says Kemi Badenoch needs to show evidence of Robert Jenrick's plot to defect to Reform.

"If the evidence isn't there, it looks as if she's kneecapped a potential challenger," he said.

But if the evidence was there, she had made a bold move that strengthened her leadership, he told Sky News.

In a sign of the sudden nature of Mrs Badenoch's decision to sack Mr Jenrick, he did not appear in Parliament to present a Bill on behalf of the Tories, as detailed in the Commons order paper.

Nigel Farage has said he is the “ultimate leader” of Reform UK as he unveiled Reform UK’s new Scottish leader at the same time as Robert Jenrick was sacked for allegedly planning a defection to the party.

“I am the leader of the party, I have quite a lot of power,” Mr Farage said when asked if he could kick out policies he does not like from Reform’s new Scottish leader, Malcolm Offord.

News that Kemi Badenoch had sacked Mr Jenrick broke during the press conference, amid rumours the senior Tory was planning a leadership coup.

Analysis: Farage is the one clear winner in the Jenrick-Badenoch row

13:18 , Athena Stavrou

The Independent’s political correspondent Millie Cooke reports:

Robert Jenrick’s rumoured defection has thrown Kemi Badenoch’s party into chaos, while he himself has been left in political limbo, as he’s been kicked out of the Tories and is yet to officially join Reform UK.

But there is one clear winner: Nigel Farage.

If Jenrick does join Reform UK, he’ll help to solve one of the party's key issues: the perception that its leaders do not have enough experience in government.

And given Jenrick is now politically homeless, he has significantly less bargaining power to use in any talks he might be having with Farage than he did before.

Somehow, without doing much at all, Reform's leader has found himself in a position of immense power here.

Everything Nigel Farage and Robert Jenrick have said about each other amid speculation of Reform defection

Robert Jenrick has been sacked as shadow justice secretary and suspended from the Conservative Party amid widespread speculation he was planning to defect to Reform UK.

However, while it had been rumoured that the Newark MP had been courting Reform, reportedly having dinner with Nigel Farage last month, their relationship has been far from smooth.

Just last year, they traded insults on social media, with Mr Farage referring to him as a “fraud” while Mr Jenrick had previously said he wished to send the Clacton MP “back to retirement”.

Here is everything Nigel Farage and Robert Jenrick have said about each other:

Analysis: Allies of Jenrick claim he was sacked because of a planned coup against Badenoch

12:59 , Athena Stavrou

The Independent’s Whitehall editor Kate Devlin reports:

Conservative sources say Mr Jenrick was fired after they saw "totally irrefutable" evidence he was planning to defect to Reform UK.

This included reports he was meeting with Reform and a dinner with Nigel Farage last month.

They also claim they got hold of a copy of his resignation speech in the last 24 hours, which is why Ms Badenoch moved.

The belief is that he was working on two options – to replace her as leader or failing that, to defect to Reform.

But his supporters say the real reason he has been sacked and thrown out of the party was because they were plotting a leadership challenge against Ms Badenoch after the May elections, which are widely expected to be disastrous for the Tories.

The Independent had approached Ms Badenoch’s office this week after seeing evidence that of a leadership push, and that Mr Jenrick's allies were preparing the letters of no confidence needed to trigger a Tory leadership contest.

One ally of Jenrick told The Independent: “This is just a move to take Robert out. There was no reason for him to defect. Many of us saw him as leader elect. This could backfire badly on her”.

Conservative councillor in Jenrick's constituency feels 'totally betrayed' by alleged defection plot

12:46 , Athena Stavrou

The Conservative councillor for the Newark West ward on Nottinghamshire County Council has said he feels “totally betrayed” by Robert Jenrick after Kemi Badenoch said he was plotting to defect.

“I’m obviously very, very, very disappointed in Robert,” he said.

“I’m a great believer in loyalty and he’s shown a complete lack of loyalty there.

“I think Kemi has done absolutely the right thing when she finds evidence of what he’s plotting to do. She’s shown real leadership there to sack him, kick him out of the party, and we’ll deal with the aftermath.”

Asked if he felt betrayed, Mr Girling said: “Totally betrayed. We’ve supported Robert with his political ambition, you know, he obviously wanted to be the leader (of the Conservative Party).

“Clearly he was disappointed he didn’t get that. But that’s not down to the efforts of this association who’s always supported him, you know, and he’s really just sort of turned his back on all that, on that loyalty, and gone his own way.

“I think that’s quite shameful, really.”

'Why did it take so long to sack Jenrick?', Starmer asks

12:32 , Athena Stavrou

Sir Keir Starmer questioned why it took Kemi Badenoch “so long” to sack Robert Jenrick as the senior Tory faced accusations of defecting to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

The prime minister told broadcasters during a visit to Scotland: “My question is: why did it take so long?

“Jenrick has been making toxic comments to try and divide our country for months, and months, and months, but it’s only now, when he’s on the verge of defecting to Reform, that Badenoch gets around to sacking him. So, that’s weakness on her part.

“There’s a bigger story here, because we’re seeing a flood of Tory politicians, ex-politicians, going across to Reform because they know that the Tory Party is a sinking ship.

“Equally, from Reform’s point of view, you’ve got Nigel Farage who is welcoming these failed politicians into his ranks and building his party as a party of the Tory politicians who let the country down so badly.”

Badenoch 'unable to stop flood' of Tory MPs defecting

12:24 , Athena Stavrou

Robert Jenrick’s sacking is a sign Kemi Badenoch is “unable to stop the flood of Tory MPs deserting her sinking ship”, the prime minister’s press secretary has said.

“It shows how weak Kemi Badenoch is that she could only sack Robert Jenrick when he was on his way out,” they said.

“Robert Jenrick is just the latest in a long line of failed Tory retreads and has joined the disgraced former Tory politicians that Reform has welcomed into its party in recent weeks. Kemi Badenoch is unable to stop the flood of Tory MPs deserting her sinking ship.”

Analysis: Badenoch’s swift action over Jenrick risks being a victory mainly for Farage

12:14 , Athena Stavrou

The Independent’s Whitehall editor Kate Devlin reports:

Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick have long been at each other’s throats.

They were rivals in the contest to lead the Conservative party only 14 months ago.

And Mr Jenrick has been a thorn in her side ever since.

But today’s announcement risks being a win not for her, but for her other opponent Nigel Farage.

The Reform UK leader appears to have succeeded in destabilising the Tory party - and may now even have time to mull over whether or not he wants Mr Jenrick, a potential leadership contender in whatever party he is a member of, to join.

'Jenrick is a fraud': Farage and Jenrick have history of trading blows

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has claimed senior party member Robert Jenrick was planning to defect to Reform UK.

Tory sources say evidence includes a dinner Jenrick had with Nigel Farage last month - though the Reform leader has said insisted there was no done deal.

Old social media posts from both Jenrick and Farage however show a less-than-friendly past.

In one X post in August, Farage labelled Jenrick a “fraud” on his record on migrant hotels.

When Farage backed lifting the two-child benefit cap, Jenrick wrote: “Why is Farage backing this policy?

“Has he cooked this up after one too many pints at his local? Has a joint found its way into his usual pack of Marlboro Golds?”

Evidence of defection was 'totally irrefutable', says Tory source

11:54 , Athena Stavrou

A Conservative Party source told the Press Association there was “totally irrefutable” evidence that Robert Jenrick was planning to defect to Reform UK.

The Tory source said: “We have had lots of reports coming in that he was meeting with Reform. He went for dinner with Nigel Farage last month, he had been speaking to people within Westminster about the possibility of a defection.

“His team has spoken to various people, including journalists, about defection.

“Kemi doesn’t take decisions lightly, she thinks about these things, she analyses things properly. But the evidence was just totally irrefutable that this was going to be done to inflict maximum pain on the party.”

The source would not say when they expected the defection would be announced, but suggested it was “going to be very soon”.

Tory chief whip Rebecca Harris informed Mr Jenrick he had been sacked and had the whip and his Conservative Party membership suspended, the source said.

Kemi Badenoch has sacked Robert Jenrick for allegedly secretly plotting to defect.

Evidence included a dinner between Mr Jenrick and Nigel Farage in December, according to The Telegraph.

Reacting to Kemi Badenoch’s announcement she has sacked Robert Jenrick from her front bench, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: “I’m very surprised that this news is broken.”

Asked if he had been speaking to Mr Jenrick, the Reform leader said: “I never reveal private conversations of anybody, which is why when people like Malcolm (Offord) came to me to talk, and he was a frontbencher, nothing ever leaked.

“I’m going to say that I’ve had conversations with a number of very senior Conservatives over the course of the last week, over the course of the last month.”

Pressed again about whether he had spoken to the now ex-shadow justice secretary, Mr Farage said: “Of course I’ve talked to Robert Jenrick. Was I on the verge of signing a document with him? No. But have we had conversations? Yes.”

Mr Farage was asked again if Mr Jenrick had been considering leaving the Tories for Reform, and said: “I think virtually every Conservative is considering leaving the Conservatives, yes.”

Asked if this included Mr Jenrick, he replied: “I think that’s been in his mind, yes. I’ve little doubt it’s been in his mind.”
