Robert Griffin III Has a Pair of Colorado Standouts in His Heisman Top 5 After Week 1

Colorado notched one of the statement wins in Week 1 of the college football season, and the team’s two biggest stars are already two of the sport’s biggest names after beating TCU 45–42.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of coach Deion Sanders, threw for 510 yards and four touchdowns, setting a school record for single-game passing yards in his Buffaloes debut. Among his top targets was his Jackson State-turned-Colorado teammate Travis Hunter, who recorded a team-high 11 receptions for 119 yards on offense, and made a number of huge plays on defense, including an incredible third quarter interception inside of Colorado’s five-yard line.

ESPN’s Robert Griffin III, a former Heisman-winning quarterback at Baylor, is all aboard the Buffs hype train. On Tuesday, he shared his “Top 5 Heisman Front Runners” after Week 1, and the two Buffaloes standouts cracked the list, with Sanders coming in at No. 1, and Hunter rounding out the list at No. 5.

“This man just threw for 510 yards against last year’s runner-up in the College Football Playoff! Guess he wasn’t only good ’cause he went to an HBCU,” Griffin said of Sanders.

Quarterbacks populated the rest of Griffin’s list, with last year’s Heisman winner, USC’s Caleb Williams, coming in at No. 2 after throwing for 278 yards and four touchdowns in a 56–28 win over San Jose State.

Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. threw for 450 yards and five touchdowns in a 56–19 win over Boise State to land at the No. 3 spot. Jordan Travis, who led Florida State to a huge win over LSU, comes in at No. 4. He threw for 342 yards with four touchdowns, adding 38 yards and a score on the ground.
