Disney has released the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans their first look at Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom.

The upcoming film serves as a sequel to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and is the 39th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The blockbuster features an ensemble cast as the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Wakandans and New Avengers converge from different universes to face Doctor Doom.

The trailer features a speech from Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, as he warns the other characters of the dangers they face in their attempt to defeat Doom.

In the clip, he can be heard saying: “I’ve fought with many warriors in my time.

“They were far stronger than all of us put together, and they died.

“They died facing enemies and threats that scared me far less than this one.”

The trailer teases various battles in the movie such as Mystique, played by Rebecca Romijn against Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova, Gambit, portrayed by Channing Tatum, against Shang-Chi actor Simi Liu, and Thor against Doctor Doom.

Thor then says: “Put aside your petty squabbles and presume nothing except this: if you return, you will return as brothers and sisters.

“But mark my words, we’re going to need a miracle.”

The trailer then reveals the return of Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans – former leader of the Avengers, who summons Thor’s hammer Mjolnir.

Several other characters including Charles Xavier, played by Sir Patrick Stewart, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Shuri, portrayed by Letitia Wright and Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm are also seen in the trailer.

Downey played Iron Man in 10 previous MCU films.

Speaking to a crowd of fans at Comic Con, he said of his return to the franchise: “I couldn’t have imagined reuniting with this amazing team — let alone as a new character.”

Marvel’s synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday reads: “Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday.

“Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately dace an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.

“This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“See it in Infinity Vision, the way it’s meant to be seen, on bigger, brighter, and more immersive screens.”

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas on December 18.
