Robbie Neilson provides Hearts injury update as defensive duo edge closer to Tynecastle return

Robbie Neilson has confirmed Hearts' injury crisis is starting to ease as he provided a positive update on the return of star defenders Craig Halkett and Kye Rowles.

Although the Tynecastle boss revealed Gary MacKay-Steven will be sidelined with a broken foot until after the World Cup, which runs through to December 18. Halkett has had his season disrupted by hamstring trouble and Rowles fractured his matarasal while scoring his first Hearts goal against St Johnstone on August 28 and is still recovering.

And Neilson knows not having a full squad has been far from ideal but he reckons things should get better in the coming weeks. “No centre-backs yet. Both of them are running now but they have just started so we are building them up,” confirmed Neilson. “They will probably be another couple of weeks. Peter Haring will be back. Gary Mackay-Steven is out until after the World Cup break with a broken foot.”

Hearts were on the wrong side of an enthralling 4-3 Scottish Premiership encounter with Celtic on Saturday which made it six games without a win for Neilson's side in all competitions.

Several key players have had spells on the treatment table with Liam Boyce, Beni Baningime, and Michael Smith all remaining out.

MacKay-Steven is on crutches as he waits for the bone in his foot to heal. He last featured as a substitute in the 3-0 home defeat to Fiorentina on October 13. While Peter Haring could be set to return for the Gorgie club's Europa Conference League clash with RFS on Thursday after recovering from concussion picked up against Aberdeen last Sunday.
